Battletech Vs. Trek
Just want to know, what you would think of the idea?
'After 9/11, it was "You're with us or your with the terrorists." Now its "You're with Straha or you support racism."' ' - The Romulan Republic
'You're a bully putting on an air of civility while saying that everything western and/or capitalistic must be bad, and a lot of other posters (loomer, Stas Bush, Gandalf) are also going along with it for their own personal reasons (Stas in particular is looking through rose colored glasses)' - Darth Yan

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
Battletech does have the advantage in ground combat, but getting there will be difficult.
Trek has starships that throw megaton yield weapons around, while Battlespace rules declare that nuclear wepons destroy any ship in the target hex (Battletech space combat). That tells me that Battletech starships cannot survive nuclear yield weapons.
Not to mention the relative accelerations (Battletech <= 20 Gs, Trek > 100 Gs).
So Battletech will win on the ground, but Trek will annihilate them in space. Of course, this is assuming that the Federation doesn't simply beam up the ground troops into their cargo bays (or just beam the troops 100 miles away from their Mechs).
So I would give Trek the victory here.

One thing that might get interesting:
Trek vs Keith Laumer's Bolos.
The Bolos use Hellbores (2.75 MT /sec/turret), and in book 5 they get HellRails (90 MT/shot, low orbit capability).
Trek has their low-speed photons (easily intercepted by Bolo PD).
Of course, if Trek tried to beam a Bolo into a cargo ship and fly away, that could get 'interesting'. The Bolo could blast its way out, or take over the computer (goven how much other stuff gets to run on a ST computer freely, this should be surprisingly easy).

The Mk 33 Bolos have 5 MT/sec Hellbores, and all Hellbores have had the ability to engage starships in low-orbit.
The UFP has phasers. Plus, I imagine having a multi-megaton photorp materialize right underneath the Bolo would prove quite a deadly encounter.
While the Concordiat at it's very peak of military technology and power (during the Melconian war) would probably have posed a significant threat to the Federation, I think that for the most part the Concordiat navy has lacked the firepower and durability needed to take on the Federation fleet.
What I think would be interesting would be depositing the Federation in the Concordiat's place at the beginning of the war with the Melconians.
