A self-taught bear expert who once called Alaska's brown bears harmless party animals was one of two people fatally mauled in a bear attack in Katmai National Park and Preserve - the first known bear killings in the 4.7-million-acre park.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Treadwell, co-author of "Among Grizzlies: Living With Wild Bears in Alaska," spent more than a dozen summers living alone with Katmai bears, and videotaping them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Treadwell was known for his brazen confidence around bears. He often got so close he could touch them. He gave them names. Once he was filmed crawling along the ground singing as he approached a sow and two cubs.
Holy shit! What an idiot! I nominate this dumbass for a Darwin award. What is it with these new-age "let's be one with nature" types?

Some people believe that because Jesus was said to talk to the animals, they can too.

It would have been even funnier if the bear expert had been eaten by a tiger.
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! All votes for me! Wheeee!" -- Lagmonster

Not likely, since the park is a low-stress environment. Just ask Comical Axi

This couple was from Malibu, I am not surprised in the least.

Well, at least they didn't die trying to keep the bears from eating other animals. That would have guaranteed him a Darwin Award in my opinion. Wasn't there someone that actually tried that?

Didn't that schmuck have a special on the Discovery Channel a few months back?

Sounds like he should've done a cross-over with Project Grizzly.
