As for my HS, I don't know the results, but you need a 90% to get an A, while you needed a 93% at my old school. Is that a good thing, or are they just dumbing down the grading curve because fewer students would otherwise be able to claim an A average?

<-- wasn't surprised either. I mean, come on, every month we've got something new on the news telling us about how we're the #1 for something bad.. drug usage, drug busts, teen rapes, teen pregnancies, etc., etc. Though, we are onyl #7 for road rage. The longest standard has been a 10 point system 90-100 = A, etc
Some districts use the 7 point system, which make things a little tougher, but doesn't hurt that much unless you get really low grades

A totally stupid plan with a significant number of students at key programs: CAT, Medical and Wellness, IB, Criminal Justice...etc...having to go a half hour plus early to school with it beginning at 7:05. I have to awake at 6:00 at least everyday, and with High School kids this regularly results in zombie land.phongn wrote:And now with School Choice*, living in the former PHUHS school zone is no longer a guaruntee that you can go there!

That's probably because the best teachers/equipment/money go to them, and the students are (theoretically) more motivated, since they had to apply to go there and can (in theory) be kicked out if they don't do well (conduct/attendence/grade-wise). That never seemed to happen, at least in mine (people getting kicked out) but that's the theory.
IB kids drop like flies.
The junior class has 141. Last year we had 150+. The senior class has like 80-something kids. (Of course the seniors are an unusually dysfunctional and irresponsible group of kids--we don't know what happened to them ).

CAT students dropped like flies one year, nobody knew WTF happened. They actually dropped standards a bit to ensure enough students would stay in for the programme to remain viable. My year was considered the King of Slackers until a few years later. Oddly, we also had the most overachieving class due to a few oddities allowing students to take more AP courses than normal.
Anyways, I'll freely admit it here: PHUHS IB beats CAT academically. Still, I have to say our program is pretty good; certainly better than the standard program at most area high schools. And if you like video editing or production or robotics, we kick ass in those fields

Florida has just officially changed to the 10 point system, but for years higher-level classes have used it 'unofficially.'Hamel wrote:The longest standard has been a 10 point system 90-100 = A, etc

AFAIK, the 7-point system was based on a bell curve, but don't quote me on that.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

My old high school steadily increased the minimum standards for all grades as the years went by, either to combat grade inflation or force teachers and students to work harder or both. When I got in, 64 was a passing grade and a 93 was an A-. By the time my sister graduated three years after me, a 70 was the lowest passing grade, and an A- was a 95.

I recall waking up at 5:00 AM to get to the bus, which usually came an hour or so later. (It was interesting because at the same time, I had the ability to go from asleep to fully alert in an instant.) It wasn't too bad, since I had the ability to sleep on the bus. (and in senior year, the unforunate tendancy to do so in case)
The high school I went to is a magnet one also, with alot of AP courses and two college math courses offered, which I took advantage of. In recent years, the IB curriculum has been gaining momentum, which my sister was a part of until a few weeks ago. (According to her, it felt kind of useless compared to the number of AP courses, the TOK portion seemed to consist mostly of people that didn't know what they were talking about, and seem a bit oddly managed in general.)
