Personally, I'm not a person to want to go into the military, esp. given that several educators I've had in the past have been in the military, both my father and stepfather have been, my aunt, my cousin, my brother, and my grandfather, and probably other relatives have all been in the military.
I suppose I should clarify. Other countries are happy that Singapore is an efficiently-run totalitarian state, and enjoy the country as a port and a place to send money. However, they don't love it enough to give up their own citizens for peculiar Singapore justice, hence no extradition.

Of course other nations are happy with Singapore. It's quite useful in checking the growing Islamic fundamentalists in Indonesia and Malaysia. There was a thread last week in another forum where Singaporean was bragging about how the tiny red dot on the map has more military hardware than its neighbors.
I've heard a rumor that it was once illegal to walk together with 3 other people in Singapore because the government might view you guys as an insurgent group. It's no doubt exaggerated, but how true was it in the past couple decades?

BTW, i live here in malaysia and i can assure you islamic fundlementalism (as opposed to moderate islam) is only a real force in the rural malay heartland states of Terrenganu and Kelantan, possibly Kedah and Perlis. of the 4, only Terengganu is significant, because of oil deposits.
the richest and most powerful states are not going to fall to the islamist opposition anytime soon.
