OTTAWA -- Conservative religious and family groups lost a major battle Thursday in their war against gay marriage when the country's highest court rejected their bid to appeal a lower court decision.
A five-judge Supreme Court of Canada panel ruled unanimously that the groups cannot appeal a judgment by the Ontario Court of Appeal that found the traditional definition of marriage to be unconstitutional.
The Association for Marriage and the Family in Ontario and the Interfaith Coalition on Marriage and Family had hoped to appeal the ruling after the federal government refused to do so.
Rather than appealing, the Liberal government drafted legislation to legalize same-sex marriage and sent the bill to the Supreme Court for its opinion.
Once the high court offers its advice, likely in the new year, Ottawa will introduce legislation which would make Canada the world's third country to allow same-sex marriage.
The government has put three questions to the high court in an attempt to build an iron-clad legal argument for the legislation and ensure it stands up in court.

Good for them. Now if only they'd drop the "family values" and "sanctity of marraige" stuff. Perhaps they should try giving a good reason to ban gay marraige in the future, assuming there is one.

Well the Defense of Mariage act is being challenged under the Full Faith and Credit Clause... And the federal Marriage Ammendment will never NEVER make it through both houses.
