I somewhere heard, that Caesar originated from an honory title for a soldier, who killed an elephant during the wars against Carthago.
The optimist thinks, that we live in the best of all possible worlds and the pessimist is afraid, that this is true.

This is not a thread about the Roman Empire, so don't turn it into one.

I'm suprised no-one else said Tarkin. Tarkin is a my personal favourite SW villian. He produced menace and coldness from his very pores.

Alright, for that I do apologise. But it is annoying to see half the threads here get hijacked and turn into a discussion/debate/argument that has nothing to do with the topic. The most recent other example I can think is what happened to the NEGVV thread...

You're right Spanky, but only to a point. This thread was going about as far as it was going to go on who is our favorite villain. And this IS a debate board afterall. People, including myself, were arguing on the finer points of villany to determine whether or not one of the villain nominees deserved the title.

So it's all good stuff.

Second to Vader, IMHO. But a close second, and were it not for Vader's presence, he would have been nearly as beloved.

Nonono, Tarkin's best line ever is "You're far too trusting, Princess. Dantooine is too distant to make a good demonstration, but we'll deal with your rebel friends soon enough."

The line would've been scary enough if delivered flatly, but when Tarkin adds in that fatherly smile and says it with such a friendly lilt, it's absolutely chilling.

The line is actually:
TARKIN: You're far too trusting. Dantooine is too remote to make an effective demonstration. But don't worry. We will deal with your Rebel friends soon enough.

Tie between Palpatine and Vader, (since Vader is more than just a villain and one of the deepest sci-fi villains I've seen yet and because Palpatine is, well, Palpatine) with Tarkin in a strong second place.

Vader.

The fat that he was only #3 in terms of all time greatest movie villains is, disturbing but its glad to see Star Wars get some credit in that regard.

The novelisation adds another classic line by Wilhuff Tarkin: "The only words with any finality are the last ones spoken." The part was indeed played to the hilt by the late, great Peter Cushing, who rivals Ian McDiarmid and the late Sebastian Shaw for claim to the finest performance in any of the films.

One of the problems with characters like Thrawn and Isard -- probably the most formidable EU characters to date -- is that they have no tangible face and aura about them; words on a page cannot truly match Tarkin's cool ruthlessness and confidence in A New Hope, or Lord Vader's dreadful majesty in The Empire Strikes Back, or the Emperor's cold brilliance in Return of the Jedi (a film wherewith Mr. Lucas ably demonstrated the truth of the saying that the quality in a great ruler that impresses most is restraint). Indee, Zsinj is probably the only villain in the novels that really has depth and personality (a testament to Mr. Allston's magnificence as a character-writer).

Additionally, many of the book's characters lack the splendour afforded by the screen. Thrawn's line about history being on the move is a sharp and impressive one, but can it truly rival Lord Vader's mild promise that "The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am"? The films' "Great Triumvirate" of villains are quite secure in their places as the set -- and unsurpassed -- standards of villainy in Star Wars.

Another vote for Vader.
He scared me when I was six and he still scares me now.
And the enterance into the rebel cruiser, one of the best scenes ever.

Any ship can qualify as a cruiser. In the SW galaxy, a cruiser is a generic term.

And my favorite SW villian would have to be Thrawn. His tactical brilliance and cold, disdainful (yet analytical) personality develop him very well. I'd love to see more back stories into his exploits. And Boba Fett runs a close second, but Lucas is raping his character (and the Tales of the Bounty Hunters. MALIGNED!!!!!!!!!!)

So tell me, Captain Brilliant, why does SW still have frigates, corvettes, gunships, and battleships if "any ship can qualify" to be a cruiser, huh?

IIRC, it was refered to as a 'Rebel Cruiser' in the novelization. And as a comparison, the Republic cruiser in 'The Phantom Menace' which was suppost to be a realitive of the Corellian Corvette, was labled a 'cruiser'.

Lucas tends to lable ships 'cruisers' as a generic term that implies 'quick' and 'fast' ships rather than the military designation.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Warlord Zsinj. The man is hilarious.

Also, I have to throw in a vote for Iceheart, just because she's a woman.
