I hope jegs2's group didn't get any of the Stykers with the defective armor.
What's the deal with these anyway? From the second article it sounds like these are intended as something quick that's a little bit more formidable and safer than a Humvee.
That doesn't seem like a good replacement for tanks or Bradleys in a lot of situations.

They're peacekeeping APCs.- well, ok, they're a fully functional 'medium' brigade- which everyone does not know what the hell it's for, exactly. I.e. there's a variant of the vehicle with a 105mm gun (a complete fiasco surrounding that development, btw), another one with TOW missiles, a command vehicle etc, but this 'family' isn't going to last long against a heavy force. Wheels for low maintenance in comparison to tracks, armor sufficient against heavy machine guns and first-generation RPG rounds (not with the defective ceramic plates, known as MEXAS however), and that's about it. Regardless, there are still key vulnerable areas (the tires for one, only one axle is run flat), and the wells behind the tires are not protected very well at all- pray that guerillas don't get too smart by shooting through there.
What I want to know is how the ceramic plates react under fire- if a shaped charge hits them, what happens to the plate? Does it crack? It's possible that volley firing RPGs (as guerillas are wont to do) could bypass this, but then, that's no different from Chechen tactics to strip off T-72B reactive armor boxes- it worked sometimes, but you'd have to be pretty accurate with your RPG. Depends on how big the plates are I guess. But still, reactive armor is a no-no for APCs. You don't want your infantry to be caught in the explosion.

A modern heavy force anyway, the world is running kind of short on those in nations that the US will actually fight on the ground however.but this 'family' isn't going to last long against a heavy force.
MEXAS has been used for years by Canadian forces. They work just fine, these defective plates are just that, defective as a result of incorrect manufacturing, that happens with all sorts of things and doesn't mean that the correctly produced plates don't work as advertised.(not with the defective ceramic plates, known as MEXAS however),
Anyway for Iraq it wont matter, RPG's will be beat by the steel cages, those probably will do a better job then the plates because of the considerable standoff, and unless I'm mistaken the Resistance groups aren't running around with several hundred pound KPV 14.5mm machine guns so the armor will hold just fine against kinetic projectiles. The hull is also proof against 155mm fragments, so it's going to have to run directly over an improvised bomb to be hurt, most are being planted alongside rather then in the road.
