UFO : Aftermath

Post by Keevan_Colton »

Has anyone else got a hold of a copy of this sequel in spirit to the X-Com games?
I finally got it to work earlier today, and damn is it good so far. It's most a squad based tactical shooter that feels like the bastard offspring from a drunken gang bang involving X-Com, Jagged Alliance and Fallout.....

Not as good as Jagged Alliance 2.

It depends on where you are. The US seems to get it on the 15th.

What? It's been in stores here for almost two weeks now!

And they even managed to do a localized edition.

It seems to be the first time when the US gets a cool game later than Poland does ;)

I didn't buy it, since I don't have the cash and hate our local translations, but one of my buddies has it and says it's very good. I'd suggest reading reviews before you commit any cash.

It's bloody amazing....I don't know if I'd pay hard cash for it though...I'm still trying to get it to bloody well run on this comp.

If you were a fan of x-com or any of the games listed above...it's definatly worth a nosey if you can stand the bugs

We're talking aliens sized bug hunt here...where everyone gets slaughtered...

Major bugs.
Beta patch fixes most of them.

OK i've got it. Just how do you destroy objectives? I've tried shooting them and it doesn't work and i can't figure out how to throw grenades.

On the grenades, ive got them equiped and have tried using both attack and throw commands but neither seem to work!

Alrighty, when you've got them in your hands, make sure the grenade you want to throw is under the reticule and then use the attack button at the far right of your character portraits..when you've clicked that...move the cursor to where you want to throw to and right click to add the action....hopefully this will work

Also, emptying a couple of clips into it on full auto can work fine too....grenades are far simpler, or if you are too lazy to walk an RPG or anti-tank weapon of some kind will do the trick too :)

I delegated all my destroy missions to other people and i haven't had any fopr a while now. I am liking the new oplasma rifles io just developed though, as well as using those big ass shotguns during boarding actions.

Don't delegate too often...only when you absolutely cannot be arsed or just can't get to the mission in time. Using delegate all the time pisses everyone off :) Not so much when you have the good will program..but it still has an effect

Gah, finally figured pout what i was doing wrong: pressing the LMB instead of the RMB :banghead:

What i'm stuck with now is trying to use the coallapsable railgun. I can't give one to anyone and i think it may have something to do with ammo as there isn't a clip shown. I would have thought that since i built it it would come with some ammo!

Also:

(Spoilers)(After you find the "Russian Area 51" and do a bit of research from it)
Can you actually use the aliens you rescue as troops and is there any way to put armour on them?
(end spoilers)

I bought Ufo Aftermath on Friday(was actually looking for Silent Storm).
Not bad but I am missing the base building alot. The missions are ok -
but the pathfinding AI is really stupid sometimes.

Edit: I had alot of trouble with the stupid copy protection. I had to
uninstall and reinstall it on my CD Writer.

I'm gettig pissed off now as the aliens with missle launchers are murdering me!
If i keep my guys clumped they all take a fair bit of damage but take down the alien fast.
If i spread them out, only a few can get a bead on him so i generally lose a guy or two before i take him down.

I also figured out that you have to wear heavy armour to use the railgun  .

For the aliens with the rocket launchers...use psi on them and give the aliens a piece of their own shit delivered human style ;)

Yes, the aliens you rescue are usable...but they can't wear armour.

Eh...the difficulty is one that forces you to use proper strategy (flanking....dummies and bait and so on..)..Each mission is one where you have to use a unique strategy...if someone gets sloppy..even on a routine mission, they'll cream you and half your team'll get killed.

Actually...my buddy says that the solution is to equip every man with powered armor and a Gatling. Then he does every mission Terminator style.

Okay, this thread is old but I just got this game, just finished the russian base (had to use stealth because the aliens are stupidly powerful), and from now on, every single anti-alien mission means that I start in a hole surrounded by aliens who IMMEDIATELY possess half of my troops and blow the rest with rockets.

Real strategy my ass. I miss X-Com.

Hm, even Apocalypse's real time was better (in fact it's one of my favs real-times) in that soldiers would go for cover on their own and fire at any threats they spotted. And could fire while running... damn they could even dodge bullets (ok that's silly but it was funny to watch :))

I prefered the real time to the turn based. And at least apocolypse gave you the chance to survive !

Erm...I'm playing it on Normal, and while Kapustinsky Yar was living HELL, it's back to normal. Aliens have better guns and there's more of them, but I have some cool equipment as well, and my men are better. It all balances out.
