Need help running DOS games on WINME.....

Post by Enigma »

I know that WinME sucks so blow me. :D But I need your help. I want to play Ultima 7 and the expansion but I can't play it because I get a message that I need about 1 meg of RAM even though I have 128Megs. How do I get it to work properly?

Ack horror of horrors.

Origin in it's stupidity decided to use their own memory manager called voodo.

It requires DOS and no memory manager loaded but a shitload of free base mem.

It was a real horror to load the sound drivers and CD rom and still have memory to run the game...

If you don't have working knowledge in DOS I just have to suggest that you forget the whole deal.

I have moderate knowledge in using DOS but can you tell me what do I need to do? Does it also involve editing the config.sys and autoexec.bat?

Unload every driver you don't need from config.sys and autoexec.bat and pray for the best.

You have three options.

1) Try to run the game under pure DOS, which means that you have to make a BOOT DISK (since WinME doesn't have a "boot to DOS" option), but this is going to get ignored anyway, like all my other posts that suggest people use a BOOT DISK to boot in DOS mode.

2) Try to mimic the experience of the original game by downloading Exult (not a bad option). It has some flaws, like really weird combat AI, but also has some enhancements.

3) Get the PATCHED executable, that allows you to run the game under Windows, without memory problems, but also sticks 100% to the original gameplay. You can get it here.
