ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Apptitude Battery.

It is suppossed to test your knowledge (and/or skill) in several different fields from general mathmatics to cryptology, mechanical skills, and basic english skills. Generally speaking it covers much the same ground as the SATs but with crypto and mechanical skills (i.e. car repair) questions tossed in as well.

Fuck, 10 votes for AF and 5 for the Army.

Only 3 votes a piece for the Marines and the Navy, you know the real armed forces. :P
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Any chance I'll still pass that test? :)
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Oh, yeah. And No Marines.
That's actually incorrect, there is 1 Company of 6th EngrSptBN (my battalion) and 1 Company of 4th Landing Support BN stationed there. Now they're reservists so maybe that's why you never saw them but they are there.
There are active duty Marines on the Naval Submarine Base Bangor, which is about an hour and a half or so from Ft. Lewis. It is a Security Force Detachment for the submarines and their special payloads. I think the number of Marines there is in the vicinity of 500 last I heard. I was stationed there actually from 1996 to 1998 and we made many trips to Ft. Lewis to use their ranges for training and such.

Soontir, I don't know if you can enlist and have the USAF pay for your college (officer) training. It might work that way; I have no real idea one way or the other. All I know is that being an officer is WAY better in every aspect.

There's the GI Bill, and probably a way to get a degree while serving (most seem to have that) and probably an ECP of some type as well.

Of course, there's always AFROTC...the one the AROTC and NROTC people make fun of. A lot. :P

He-heh...and in my case, we didn't need a host nation or the CONUS to nuke them from either

Apparantly the USAF pays 100% tuition while your serving as well as the GI bill. Oh, and BTW, I got a 99 on the ASVAB.

If you want to actively serve your country. Save lives, enforce the laws, and join the last true seamanship school in the country. Join the Coast Guard.

Well, whatever you decide, remember this. You will pass the ASVAB. I've taken sobriety tests that are harder and in fact, got a perfect score on it (I mean perfect, I identified the dummy problem). As long as you have a brain, anyone can pass it.

I tried to enlist in the Coast Guard and they really were filled to the scuppers enough that they disqualified me on a minor medical problem (though now I know there is a specific procedure that I could have followed that would have allowed me to challenge that medical disqualification, but I didn't sweat it that much... next year I'll try again in the Navy or Marine Corp, with the knowledge I have now in mind).

Answer for yourself two questions: What job do you want, and what lifestyle do you wish to live. Those answers will give you your best choice.

And I hope you are not seriousily contemplating making this decision based on this poll result. No one on this board is qualified to tell you what service you should enter except yourself. Joining the military and marriage are probably the two biggest decisions you will ever make. If you trivialize them, you may end up regretting it for a very, very long time.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

Let's see,
1. Join USAF to help raise money for College.
2. Plan on graduating to be an aeronautical engineer *hopefully*
3. Fallback: Stay in USAF Service.
4. Hard life style, but have time for fun stuff.

That a good outlook? heh

Cyaround,
Jason

Hard lifestyle?

Just which Air Force are you talking about?

Seriously, everyone I have ever talked to says the Air Force is probably the most "9-5" service there is.

I can't say which branch I'd join or which branch you should join, but I can say that I would definitely not want to join the Coast Guard. I wouldn't want to have to force illegal immigrants back to their countries by the threat of force and/or the use of force. I wouldn't want to deal with drug interdiction shit either. Also, I might have to deal with nutjob terrorists in the future. I just don't find those parts of the job too appealing...
