... and then monster says fuck microsoft

Post by aphexmonster »

... but linux keeps fucking me up.

Alright, i am completely fed up with Bill Gates and microsoft and feel that its time to run a new platform for a change. It is a well known fact that i have a pretty shitty computer, so bare with me as i explain the facts that i dont quite come to understand.

Im running a pentium 133 with 64mb of ram, and am currently trying to install redhat 8.0

So i have my two installation CDs, but my computer cant boot off of CD, i have to make a boot disk. It says theres a dosutilities folder on the CD that i can take the boot.img off the CD and boot it up that way. There is no such folder on either CD so im a tad bit aggravated. So i find the file on the internet and boot it up from disk and when i try to install, the CD tells me that the boot.img doesn't mattach with the version on the CD. First of all, The file is a rh80boot.img. So i play rawrite tag with this and another boot.img file claimed they're made for RH80 but every time i get the same error. FUCK by this point, im fucking pissed. I try loading it up with the other CD in, it gets passed the start up screen this time... im like ah good. Then, when its time to copy files, it tells me to put in the other CD... after inserting the first CD it gives me the error message FUCK YOU!

Does anybody have any solution for this .... at all ? ...

im not even gonna go into the troubble basiclinux has been giving me. Is there any way i can install REDHAT ... because i'de honestly like to know

Um, for desktop purposes, Xfree86 on a P133 will be dog slow.

I have RedHat 8 running my web server on a P133 with 64MB of RAM. There's a fair amount of disk swapping when certain functions are performed, and I'm not even in the GUI.

When I start up X to do anything, I can go in the kitchen to fix something in between mouse clicks.

I know EDO RAM is expensive, which is why I haven't upgraded... and for my computer's purposes, I have enough. But don't even think of trying to replace Windows with a 64 MB machine. I still had an unwanted level of disk swapping with 128 megs on another machine.

On my RH8 CD #1, there's a \dosutils folder, and the program I used to create the boot disk with was \dosutils\rawritewin (well, I used the program for 7.3... it still exists on the RH8 CD, though; and, yes, I just checked). If you don't have these folders on your first disc, then something is wrong with your burn. Either the ISO was corrupted, or it didn't burn correctly. (Either of which would explain why the image you downloaded didn't match the CD.)
Later...

I've run LFS at a decent speed on a P-133 with a 1GB HDD, with RPMs extracted from RH linux to save compile time. The problem is that web browsing with Firebird is damn slow, and I didn't have space to install the KDE libraries for Konqueror.
Have you tried text mode installation?

Well, i got it installed, it turns out that they dont have the files on the CD, and were able to direct me to a place that had the files i was loooking for. You would think that would be good news eh? ...

Well, its not, Xfree86 i haven't even seen yet. Ive got the program installed, but Xwindows wont even start. I type startx at the command prompt and i crash uber-hard. It says VGA mode is set to 0 where 1 is the lowest variable compadible or something. Ive read through the log files and such and sort of have an idea of what the problem is. Does anybody have any idea on how i can even start it up ?

Sounds like your XFree86Config file is screwed up somewhere. What video card do you have in that old box?

Knoppix is a pretty kickass backup lifesaver, but I don't know if your system could handle it.

Well, it's older hardware, so you can probably run 'xf86config' from the commandline (minus the quotes). Give it your information, and it should create you a new config file. Then try starting X again.

Yeah i found that ... and yes i have knoppix, and yes it beats my computer down, it wont load it. I got into my Red Hat Xwindows finally after running the Xf86config and setting shit up ... but like, its stuck at something bigger than 640x480 i think ... its hella shitty, its the biggest resolution ive ever seen, and my video card should be able to handle 800x600 but i guess i still have some bugs to work out ... i almost have my internet up, but i still think im pretty far, imma see what i can do with my xwindows system ...

Code: Select all

Identifier: Cirrus Logic GD754x (laptop)
Chipset: CL-GD7541/42/43/48
Driver: vga
Do NOT probe clocks or use any Clocks line.
This card is basically UNSUPPORTED. It may only work as a generic
VGA-compatible card. If you have an XFree86 version more recent than what
this card definition was based on, there's a chance that it is now
supported.
Looks like your Cirrus Logic 7548CE is unsupported. However, there are ways to get it working under XFree86 3.2, though I do not know if it applies to 4.x
Video
The video is based on the Cirrus Logic 7548CE chipset, which is "unsupported" by XFree86 (i.e. Linux and NetBSD). However, it appears that XFree86 3.1.2e does, in fact, work with this chipset. According to ctm@ardi.com on comp.sys.laptops

Chipset "clgd5428"
Option "linear"
Membase 0xfc000000

in the device section in XF86config will solve most problems with the system, and allow a 1024x1023 virtual desktop.

Cirrus Logic also provides support for this chipset under OS/2. (Other drivers for this chipset are listed on their website.)
From http://www.mit.edu/people/shabby/micron.html

XF86Config should be in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/ or /etc/X11 - edit both to be sure.
