Switched to Linux

Post by Kyle »

Yeah, I finally did it. I'm trying linux out. Just installed Mandrake 9.1 and am running it with KDE right now. Never used Linux before so expect to be getting some stupid questions from me till I learn my way round this comp.

Well, if the resident Linux geeks here can't answer your questions, you can always head over to http://www.linuxquestions.org ;)

Thanks, I've bookmarked that site. Like I said I've never used Linux before and I've installed it on an old computer of mine and
I'm switching between my new computer running XP and the old one with Mandrake.

It''s a Clereon 400Mhz with 128MB RAM and 4GB HD. Nothing great but it should do. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on how to optimize it. It's running somewhat slow, which I expected considering how old the computer is, but if there's anyway to speed it up a little I'd be interested.

Once I get the hang of it I'm gonna by a new hard drive and dual boot on the new computer.

Xfree86 is somewhat slow on all machines, unfortunately, and Linux tends to be more resource-intensive. I try and shut off as many daemons as possible.

I was using Gentoo Linux, but tired of compiling all the time. Currently, I'm using Fedora Core 0.95, which is a beta to the successor of RedHat Linux 9.

Mandrake 9.2 is out, by the way ;)

I know 9.2's out. I unfortunately downloaded 9.1 literally the day before 9.2 came out. Since then everytime I try to connect to any of the mirrors I can't get connection, it keeps timing out. Great luck, huh

Have you tried BitTorrent?

BitTorrent gets a little complicated. It's not hard to upgrade Mandrake anyway.

Doesn't Mandrake have apt-rpm? If so, the magic "apt-get dist-upgrade" command works wonders - I used to go from RH9 to FC0.95.

Mandrake uses grpmi, but I'm not sure of the syntax. It doesn't have apt-rpm as far as I know.
