Homeworld alien species

Post by Peregrin Toker »

I don't know whether to put this in OSF or G&C, but I've put it here just to be safe:

I've played "Homeworld: Cataclysm" but never the original "Homeworld" - so I ask fans of the original: Do we ever get to know what the various alien species in the HW-verse look like??

I think the Kushan look pretty much exactly like humans for some reason - but what about the Taiidani, the Bentusi, Kadeshi and the Turanic Raiders??

According to HW2 canon they are all human derivitives.

The Kadeshi are the same specicies as the Kushan / Taidanii (whichever you play), so go figure :).

I think because of the vague nature of Homeworld (the good and bad guys are switched depending on which you pick) they didn't elaborate on this too much. Otherwise, listen to ggs.

The original HW was VERY ambiguous on the subject, the only evidence we get of the nature of the Kushan(Kadeshi and Kharaki) is in the end seen when we see Karan and a guard platoon disembarking to the cheering thousands.

In Cata they tried to develop the image of the Bentusi and the Hiigarans, but I just don't like the story line they made, and the fact that the Somtaaw Kiith-Sa sound like they are Swedish.

I haven't played HW2 so I can't tell you what to think.

But do they look exactly like humans, or are they very different from their human ancestors like certain other "aliens" who have evolved from humans?? (I won't tell you which certain others I'm referring to, since that would be a spoiler to my story "The Wormhole War".... which recently got updated, BTW - I know I'm plugging shamelessly, but I welcome feedback on the chapter I posted yesterday)

BTW - what about the Vaygr?? I haven't played HW2 either.

To me, "Somtaaw Kiith-Sa" sounds more like Finnish than Swedish. (and as a Scandinavian, I should know!!)

And in Cata I've actually only gotten to level 7 (I didn't start playing that long ago).... was there any clue what the Bentusi look like??

HW2: Everyone is human. Vaygr, Hiigarans, Taiidan, even the Bentusi (presumably). We very clearly see both Karan Sjet and Makaan.

The Bentusi, as part of their reputation as Angelic Space Brothers (TM), probably look like handsome, elfin versions of us.

Nah, they probably look like Karan Sjet, only with more wires.

The one shot of a Bentusi I recall is a dude leaning forward, with everything but his face obscured for the wiring.

Yup, they are human, considering you see a pic of the Vager leader head in several cutscenes.

Is Karan Sjet that teal-haired woman I've seen pics of in some previews of HW2??

That's not hair. That's wiring.

Play the first one. It explains. The only disturbing part about it in this one is she's apparently 120, and still has a 20 year old's D-cups. And she was just in a wet T-shirt contest before being wired in.

Heres a good question. What do you think happens to the crews of the ships you capture during HW1? Besides that Taiidan Frigate in Return to Kharak, we know what happened to them.

It could be that the Kushan (or, at least the better-off Kushan) have achieved eternal youth thanks to genetic engineering. (or know some other way to slow down the aging process)

No. Her life and youth were were extended by her connection to the second hyperspace core. It's similar to how Bilbo had a much longer life than most Hobbits due to his contact with the One Ring, only it's more potent in that regard and not malicious.

I would have opted to explain it through Cyro-Stasis, myself, since they clearly have that technology down pretty darn well.

I thought that actually would kill her.

No. Like I said, the hyperspace cores function as a high tech One Ring. She is driven to do things she may not wish to do by the core, her life and youth are preserved, the core grants her a special power, the core wants to return to its master, etc.

Erm.... how exactly does Hyperspace function in HW??

Magic, for all intents and purposes.

Well, that's not quite true. In HW1, it was nice and gritty. No magic crap, just good old fashioned technology. HW2 takes that style and stomps it into dust and remolds it into some sort of crazy fantasy adventure with Karan Baggins and Bentus the Gray versus the Dark Lord Makaan.

Basically, it works like such. Bentusi find first core. Make cheap copies (hyperspace modules, minus the core) and sell it to everyone else. Only a module with a core can "far jump". Since the Bentusi have the only known core, only they can far jump. Hiigarans find core #2, and Vaygr find core #3. When the three cores combined, you can awaken Sajuuk, the great maker...blah blah blah. Makaan wants to wake up Sajuuk t rule the galaxy, Hiigarans want to defend Hiigara, and the Bentusi just don't give a damn and end it all (lucky bastards).

Cores basically amplify the Hyperspace Wavefronts or somesuch, allowing faster, farther-reaching hyperspace travel. Think of it as like a graphics card on your computer. Without one, you can still play games, but they'll be a lot slower and not nearly as pretty. With a graphics card, everything is souped up. And, if you manage to combine the three (Voodoo, ATi, and Nvidia), then you can unlock the majesty of the entire PC gaming Library, and...uh....play games until you die. Or something. Yeah.
