Gas or electric?
Ok. I am really annoyed with electric stoves lately. They don't cook for shit, and stuff I normally wouldn't burn.. I burn.

I'm told gas is better, but really, I don't usually give a damn, as long as I have a decent pan, I'm fairly happy to cook on both of them.

Danny doesn't do stove top cooking. All Danny does well is refer to himself in the third person and heat frozen pizzas and T.V. dinners. BUT- Gas is better. I know this from living many different places and hearing my mom bitch about electric. It doesn't heat evenly (different parts of the element heat up at different rates) Some parts are hotter than others, IIRC. Gas heats quicker, evenly, and less pollution. Plus, it's really neat to cook over an open flame, especially a blue one.

And correct on the uneven heating. Which would be why I burn thigns I wouldn't normally burn wehen I cook on electric.

Gas cooks better, but on the other hand, more natural gas piping in the home means more opportunities for catastrophic failure and explosions. While rare, they do happen.

That was always a fear of mine as well...seems like it would be so easy for a gas line to fail...I don't know what, if any corrosive effects the gas would have on the piping...but if the flame were to get into the pipes somehow...wouldn't it...I don't know...blow up the house quite easily? Not to mention I've been around those outdoor regulator thingys...and oftentimes you can smell the gas....scary stuff....Microwaving is an atrocious way to cook...but it's my preferred method, other than oven cooking, and with on oven, no worries about uneven heating....

Of course, nothing is perfectly safe. My mother knew a woman who was living in a small apartment, and a road crew accidentally hit a major gas line with a backhoe shovel while working on the road. Because of the dirt piled on top of the line, the gas pressure vented not into open air, but into an adjacent basement.
The gas built up and was eventually set off in a titanic exposion, which occurred as the road crew was calling for assistance. She died and so did quite a few other people.
Fucking lazy-ass road crews couldn't be bothered to check before they started digging. They knew where the guilt lay; they finished repaving on that part of the road literally about five times faster than any other road crew I've ever seen. I guess they didn't like being stared at by the hateful eyes of neighbours, so they actually worked to get the job done quickly, instead of lazing around like the unionized good-for-shit bums that they are.

I'm sorry to hear that, but I think it is a bit drastic to assume that all the utility road crews are lazy bastards. I can tell you from personal experience that here in California, whenever there is a major power failure (and we've had quite a few) the local PG&E guys go above and beyond the call of duty in getting power restored.Darth Wong wrote: Fucking lazy-ass road crews couldn't be bothered to check before they started digging. I live in a remote area and about four years ago during the Christmas season, we had a major storm which shut down power all over the state. The PG&E crews worked triple shifts in the pouring rain with massive winds to get power on as quick as possible, even in my neck of the woods. I spoke to the guys working on my street and you wouldn't believe the dedication these guys put in to their jobs. It absolutely blew my mind.

Gas stoves are usable during a blackout, which is how we made dinner that night. My father has an electric stove and it's a pretty crappy piece of shit.

Never denied that, but gas is definitely the way to go, especially if you have a place prone to power outages (read: Dalton's post).Frank Hipper wrote:I've cooked on gas stoves that suck ass. Not nearly enough gas volume to get a decent pan temperature. I prefer gas, but it can very much depend on the particular appliance.

I prefer the halogen hobs my parents and sister have to the scary naked flame gas that heats spectacularly uneven in the rented flats I've lived in.

I hear that gas is better but I've never had a problem cooking with the electric stoves I've had. I guess I'm just used to it. And with electrics I don't have to mess around with pilot lights that can potentially go out.

I have an electric stove/oven but that's because my house isn't set up for gas. I do have a grill that uses propane though.
I think gas is supposed to be better and quicker but I feel a little safer with just electric.
From what I've been told recently that it is absolutely necessary to have gas in order to do tortillas correctly.

Sounds like you've got a lousy electric stove. I've used electric stoves all my life and they're actually pretty good provided they're a good stove to begin with. The best I've used are the ceramic range top ones.verilon wrote:Ok. I am really annoyed with electric stoves lately. They don't cook for shit, and stuff I normally wouldn't burn.. I burn.

I just saw an informercial for one of those Halogen bulb cookers yesterday. They look pretty nifty. Do they really cook as fast as a microwave but with better results?InnerBrat wrote:I prefer the halogen hobs my parents and sister have to the scary naked flame gas that heats spectacularly uneven in the rented flats I've lived in.

I was just about to make this point. Gas ranges don't require power to work, which means that during power outages, we frequently got dinner guests.Dalton wrote:Gas stoves are usable during a blackout, which is how we made dinner that night. Also, gas ranges work better and the moment you turn off the gas, the heat goes away. This is not true with electric ranges.

Umm... not that fast, but pretty damn fast. I prefer gas stoves. I've worked in many kitchens untill i became a secretary and it comes down to this, how many top class kitchens use electric stoves? Not any i've ever worked in and that was quite a few. I prefer gas myself because as mentioned in the even of a power cut it's still usable and to be honest i've found that electric cookers and stoves eat up electric like popcorn.
