What the fuck happened to Dennis Miller?

Post by Darth Wong »

It's been a while since I watched Dennis Miller, but I saw his "Raw Feed" HBO special (from March of this year) last night, and he appears to have sold his balls to charity.

He said nothing really controversial during the entire show (unless you count cheerleading popular majority opinions "controversial"), and the only time he showed any venom at all was his flaming of France (as if that takes guts in March 2003 on an American network).

What the hell happened to this guy?

This isn't surprising given that he has been talking about going into politics as of late (no doubt the first of the Arnold celebrity knock-offs) so I gather he is trying to transition into less of the conservative nut that he was before. I don't know who he is fooling with this though; the guy has a SERIOUSLY checkered past and he doesn't command nearly the amount of moderate respect that Arnold has.

Bush happened. He did such a sickeningly patriotic and pro-Bush routine at a recent charity gig that Elton John (the next performer after Miller) got up onstage and said "If anyone ever asks you why the world hates America, you can sum it up in two word: Dennis Miller."

Has anyone ever seen Dennis Miller on Bill Maher's show on HBO? He's usually among the panel, and while everyone else is discussing politcal issues and the topic at hand Miller only pops in to make jokes--they are usually funny, but off-topic and don't contribute to the discussion, which is fine very once in a while, but on this show that's all Dennis Miller does. It's really very irritating....

Its a damn shame.

I have most of his rants saved on my computer, and still, all I can say is its a damn shame.

Bush plus September 11th. I've seen some crazy shit happen over the past 10 years. Arianna Huffington used to square off with Al Franken on Politically Incorrect and now is lambasting the Bush administration about the same shit that Al Franken was back in 1992 while Miller is sucking its cock. I've seen him appear once or twice on Bill Mahr's Real Time, and he's a complete waste of space with nothing to contribute but stupid references and bad one-liners.

Right now, it's not just controversial to make fun of the administration; it's what the Left has appropriately dubbed "patriotically incorrect." If you don't like Bush, you must by extension hate America, you godless pinko-commie heathen terrorist. Miller had conservative leanings anyway, and he's now decided to forsake any originality to get easy laughs with French jokes and making fun of Muslims.

Miller hasn't ever really had conservative leanings (he supported Gore in 2000).

True, but last few times I have seen him on TV, he has expressed open admiration and support for President Bush. He is one of the few people one would expect to openly criticize him and the current administration.

Dennis Miller used to be willing to poke fun at the failings of both sides. This has changed. Enormously. Ever since 9/11, Dennis Miller has apparently assimilated the concept of the Sacred Cow.

He was the kind of guy that would always support things like racial profiling of Muslims, however, if memory serves. Now he can use that stance to get cheap laughs by poking fun at Muslims.

I honestly haven't watched a whole lot of him (I enjoy him though), but wouldn't he bash Christians just as much?

Absolutely not. He is very careful not to bash Christians at all. The box for the DVD of his "Raw Feed" HBO special promised that he would fearlessly tread over all kinds of forbidden ground, including religion and politics, and THAT WAS THE BIGGEST PILE OF FUCKING FALSE-ADVERTISEMENT BULLSHIT THAT I'VE EVER SEEN.
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.

He USED to be a very staunch liberal back in the day (all those late night drives up the PCH with Robin Williams stoned out of his mind...) but this started to change around the election and ever since 9/11 he hasn't said a single criticism of Bush.

That and his increasingly annoying grammer gimmick is starting to grate at me...
