My flat has electric, first time I've used one, fan assisted too I believe. While easy to use, I much prefer gas, just seems better overall. I can only really compare this to BBQs where you get proper charcoal ones and then some idiot gets a gas one and loses the essence of the BBQ, uh, but that's OT.
My parents had a pressure cooker before the gas one mind. Not sure if they're any better or worse.

BAH! I HATE electric stoves! Gas stoves are nice and easy to use (if you use one that doesnt use a pilot light), and they cook exactly how you want them to. Plus it's easy to gauge how high the fire is (just look at its size) while electric are hard to gauge.
Worse, while a gas stove has a smooth, flat power curve like this:
usually electrics have a power curve more like
this ugly piece of crap. And people wonder why they're burning stuff on electrics that they never do on gassers. It's because you can't make fine adjustments in the middle because the damn heat to power curve is practically vertical.
BTW the city of New Orleans is basically a massive collection of old sometimes-dilapidated wooden homes, and nearly every single one is wired for gas. While I hear of the occasional house fire caused by gas, I've never seen anything to indicate gas to be a major contributor to them overall.

Gas stove cook with fire. Electric stove cook with magic. Fire good. Magic bad.

Gas doesn't stop working on cold nights when ice, snow and wind has knocked out the power and I'm hungry for warm food.

I'll take one of those electric induction ranges that they use in the CN Tower restaurant. Like a gas stove it heats up and cools down instantly and is just as controllable, but you don't have an open flame to worry about. A good high power unit can boil a medium size pot of water in well under 5 minutes, just as fast as gas. Unfortunately it won't work in a blackout, but that's what propane camp cookers are for.

That's yet to happen where I live. The idiotic power company however has accidentally brought down the power lines in my town, while trimming trees to prevent that from happening.Montcalm wrote:

They're real enough since they're already in commercial use, but you're right, they're not exactly affordable.verilon wrote:How about within the realm of reality and affordability..?

He is correct, though. You can use a griddle.. but it just doesn't taste the same unless you use a gas stove.. Electricity is a pisspoor way to generate heat. You're basically wasting it generating heat via electrical resistance. It IS safer than gas in that it won't blow up your house, but you're a hell of a lot more likely to get burned touching an electric element you THINK is cool but isn't. Those fuckers get hot enough to light a cigarette long before they start glowing.

The main advantage of gas is that you have total control over the temperature. You can also hold the pan off the burner so as to heat a certain area of it; try doing that with any electric stove.
