Probably not. The word "crusade" has many meanings, but it has a special meaning to Muslims. Why do you find this hard to digest? The term "final solution" can mean lots of things, but it has a particular meaning when you say it about a Jew, wouldn't you agree?

Did anyone at the time realize that meaning, however? It has been a long time since the last crusade, even when you count the government-sponsored ones in the 16th century. Arabic culture is a hard thing to unravel--and as the fact the attacks occured demonstrated--we weren't on the ball about doing so. Is it really necessarily a surprise that a speechwriter's use of the word "crusade" was allowed to slip through without it occuring to anyone that the Muslim world is still upset about this after five hundred years?

The arab culture is a foul and barbaric one right now. EVERY tiny little whim must be indulged, or it's racism, bigotry, or evil.
Yet, they are either clueless, or indiferent to any offence THEY give.

They DEMAND to be treated with respect they don't give, even to their own.
Their treatment of holy sites in the middle east is a prime example. God forbid a Jew or Christian set eyes apon, or foot down on, an Islamic holy site.

What does it say about a group, or culture, that is now taken seriously only when it gets violent, or threatens violence?(and is completely ignored otherwise)
What does that say about that group, when it's just fine to use any tactic, as long as it's used on infidels.(the ends justify the means, but only OUR ends)

Mark, you realize that Africa, THe Middle East and south Asia along with the vast oil reserves of the caucasus mountains just happen to have a signifigant isloamic population. Also, the Arab nations were our ALLIES in this contenant until the fall of the Ottoman Empire. When we didn't support thier bid for indipendance by made them trade their Turkish despots for French and English exploitation.

Like our intial arming and Training of Ho-Chi-mhin etc, it's one of those cases where the united states severly dropped the ball very badly. Come to think of it, so's Iraq/Iran (gee what didn't we fuck up there)

I know a woman whose Uncle and Grandparant's died in Iran during the revolution. She was born HERE because her mom was going to school, here at the time. Her father was forced to defect to Iraq, her whole family has been made up of Moderate, westernized types.

Oh, btw on the outset of the first Gulf war, she was assulted and barely escaped being raped by AMERICANS while attending college, in California.

i can't speak for the arab world(but what about kuwait? or Bahrain? or Qatar? or Dubai? or perhaps Turkey?) or the palestenians, but except for a NOISY minority, most muslims in my region xcepting the mess in the phillipines are perfectly happy to go on embracing whatever western culture is exported by the wonder of macdonalds, hollywood, starbucks and what have you.
