Imperial Star Destroyer or Imperator class Star Destroyer ?

Post by Sarevok »

Which the correct term for the mile long triangular Imperial destroyers that we see in the Star Wars movies ?

Personaly I would go with Imperial Star Destroyer. It may not be technicaly accurate but it sounds cooler.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

They're both correct.

The common thing to say when you see a Star Destroyer is just to say it's an Imperial Star Destroyer. It is- the Empire owns it. However, the fuckwits at WEG took it upon themselves to say this was the *class* as well. That's just fucking moronic. Imperator is the class, Imperial is just slang. It also fits exactly with Acclamator, Mandator, Procurator and Executor (that's why Dr. Saxton used those names in the ICS). I for one will never say "Imperial-class". I don't say "Japanese-class" submarine either.

Imperator sounds like a real class, while Imperial sounds idiotic.

The truth will be never fully known. While I agree with Vympel, I had to think about Republic-class vessels as well, which would also sound moronic.

The name Imperial should also come from the fact that these huge ships were developed and manufactured under the reign of the Galactic Empire, not like the earlier Victory-class.

Re: Imperial Star Destroyer or Imperator class Star Destroye

Post by Chris OFarrell »

Regardless of what people THINK about it, the fact is that Imperial is the name of the ship.

Its the name that the people at Lucasfilm/Luasarts have accepted as the ships offical name. Thus it stands. Every offical source that gives a class name for the ISD gives Imperial. The only thing that does give the Imperator name are Mandles blueprints which unless I am mistaken have never been accepted or claimed as part of the SW canon by Lucasfilm/Lucasarts.

Thus, Imperator is nothing but a fan name for the Imperial, which is its offical and correct class name. QED

Save for a sole first-generation reference, the ships are consistently referred to both as Imperial Star Destroyers and as Imperial-class Star Destroyers. Ergo, the class leader was probably, given the nigh-unanimity of the source material, named Imperial and not Imperator.

This is not perhaps as stupid as it sounds considering that we have seen ships in the real world U.S. Navy with names like USS America, USS President, USS Constitution, USS United States, etc.

And I don't see whats so bad about Imperial. It makes sense. If the class was put into production at the start of the Imperial era as teh Galactic Empire came into being, its quite a logical name. Just like the Victory class was produced as the Republic started to realy gain the upper hand in the clone wars, hence the name.

I like the name Imperator better, but most of the sources have gone with Imperial with the sole exception of the old 700-odd meter ISD design concept.

Execpt that the class leader, was named Imperator, and came out from Gyndine.

Imperator
The first ship of this class, constructed at the KDY shipyards at Gyndine. A ship with this name followed Admiral Zaarin in his coup attempt; defeated by Thrawn's forces. (Was this the original Imperator, or a ship with a recycled name?) Imperator was also one of the destroyers recognising the authority of Imperial Intelligence Director Ysanne Isard at the time of Coruscant's fall to the New Republic, though it was absent from the capital planet's defence. This venerable ship was a formidable reputation. Its loss to the New Republic would have great symbolic importance.

It's from Dr. Saxtons SD list. As far as I can tell, the source of the Gyndine vessel is the TIE fighter series and the books thereof. The second Imperator may or may not be the same one. There's also a number of non-ISD vessels with the same name.

I'm fine with Imperator-class Star Destroyer, or Imperial Star Destroyer, which is the is the canon, movie name. Imperial-class belongs on the bonfire together with the 8 km SSD.

Personally, I think the class is properly the Imperator-class but picked up the nickname Imperial Star Destroyer and it stuck even though it was in accurate. It's not with out some precendent after all.

Imperator Class, Imperial Stardestroyer. The only time 'Imperial Class' is used is in the EU. While cannon states that it stands unless the movies conterdict it, I will wait patiently untill they do. Can always hope for a reference or one liner in Ep III about building new and powerful Imperator's.

Imperial as a class is dumb. Not as dumb as 'Super' but dumb none the less. Can you imagine getting stationed on the 'Super'? Gah, blah.

While Imperial-class is the accepted canon name of the model of starship (ref: ICS), Super-class is Rebel slang. The Emperor himself refers to the Executor as a "command ship", as does Han Solo. The only person to refer to the vessel as "Super Star Destroyer" (note there is no class mentioned) is Admiral Ackbar in the heat of battle. From this, we can conclude that it is a ___-class command ship (_CS). This is straight out of the movies, and is the highest order of canon. Some have taken to calling it an Executor-class Command Ship (ECS), although to my best knowledge this is fan-speculation, and for all we know it could be a Super-class Command Ship.

Executor was the first ship of the class, ergo they are Executor-class Command Ships.

For the record there is NO record that the Imperator was the name of the first 1600m Star Destroyer. Yes there is a drawing by Mandell of the "Imperator-class" vessel. In other words the only indication we have that the first vessel was the Imperator is the Mandel Blueprints themselves. I think the only sensible conclusion is that there was a short run of 700m Star Destroyers of the Imperator class. However, despite being linked to the Star Destroyers from the movies in our minds, Lucasfilm has been rather clear in that the 1600m vessels we see are Imperial-class ships.

The RPG school of thought has. Remember these people are responsible for the five and eight mile Executor bullshit. The intentions of the Mandel blueprints are clear and follow naval conventions and movie-canon KDY nomenclature (Acclamator, Executor), where as the WEG sources were flawed and responsible for many errors.

I can just as well say the Imperial doesn't exist since its gun layout in no way reflects the canon ISD.

*shrug* Canon says Imperial Star Destroyer, but not Imperial-class Star Destroyer. Given the Mandel blueprints and the EU's use of the Imperator as first-of-class, I'd say Imperator-Class Imperial Star Destroyer (generally called simply an Imperial Star Destroyer or ISD) seems to make the most sense.

They are called Imperial-Class in several of the EU books, never Imperiator. Books out weigh a couple of blueprints that never became official.

I think that is the point here. EU says Imperial-class and UNOfficial blueprints (which are seriously flawed) say Imperator. You say people who brought you 8km Executor brought Imperial-class and thus Imperial-class is wrong? How about the fact that Mandel blueprints size is way off ISD size? Or are we ignoring that fact? I think you people just don't like Imperial-class and try and forget the little above facts so you can have your Imperator.
