I would not consider this normal unless you've been working extremly hard and haven't had much sleep.

And if Verilon is going through one of his spells he might bite you soon.

Well lookie who's back. someone was convinced they flamed you off the board, bored.

anyway...
Sleep is weird... there have been studies done to show that (Not a direct quote here) You can stay up for 10 hours, sleep 8, and then again, people who have stayed up for 24 hours and more show the same effects after 8 hours of sleep. so it's almost like there's no direct correllation between the amount of time you stay up and the amount of time you sleep...though, I would say it is not normal, per se' to sleep 17 hours, it's certainly nothing to worry about....though if it continues to happen you may want to see hyour doc about it. If i'm not mistaken, I believe excessive sleeping could be an indication of anemia...or, um..i think mononucleosis. Bad juju, that.

Back to the subject, yes sometimes your body'll try to compensate for lack of sleep. It's not normal, but in this overworked society of ours, it's an ugly fact. Maybe we could get some of that Army No-Doz stuff that completely kills your need for sleep every now and then...

If I am not woken up by anything, I will sleep for 16-20 hours every day. Drives my parents and friends nuts.

Usually I only get about 10-14 hours though. And right now only about 4-5 1/2 hours each night... *ugh* (and we wonder why I can't remember 4 of the last 5 return commutes from school...)

I have slept over 48 hours before, but that was right after I had stayed awake for over 3 days. (let's just say: "never again will I stay up that long")

I don't seem to have that problem. Even when I don't set my alarm clock, I usually end up waking up at around 7-10 hours after falling asleep, perhaps less if I was staying up until 2am and waking up later in the morning, which I seem to be more used to. The only time where I had a problem with oversleeping was after a trip to Washington, where I would usually get up at 11am after going to sleep 10-12 hours earlier. That would be 3pm eastern time, so when I got home from the trip, I would usually sleep in to noon. I did that for a few days straight, and blamed it on the trip.
