Widescreen or Fullscreen?

Post by Stravo »

I just came back from buying the Indiana Jones pack - it is selling like hotcakes, everyone on line ahead of me at Best Buy had one and for all you fans, BestBuy has the best price here in NYC, Circuit City is selling it for 49.99 Best Buy's price: $44.99 plus a Best Buy exclusive offers an extra DVD on Raiders stuff so you're getting an extra DVD on top of the the fourth special features one. BUt I digress.

The shelves were nearly empty when I got there save for stacks and stacks of full screen editions, the Widescreens were selling out at an astonishing rate. So obviously people were choosing widescreen over full screen by a massive margin.

Do you prefer full screen or wide screen and why?

For me it is definately widescreen as I get to see the movie as it was intended to be seen.
Wherever you go, there you are.

Widescreen, for the most part. But some movies warrant fullscreen. Usually it depends on the movie.

OAR. Original aspect ratio. For most movies that means widescreen. Pre 1954 or so it means fullscreen. TV is also fullscreen, mostly.

Because that's what the director intended. And you get to see more of the frame than fullscreen, where the opposite is what most of the losers think happens.

The people that buy fullscreen are usually people that don't no any better and the really stupid that will complain when everyone switches to widescreen television about the black bars on the side of the tv when they play their fullscreen movies.

Widescreen. TVs are going that way anyway, so might as well be prepared.

Wide screen. I bought a full screen Ep. II and now evertime I watch it, I miss the YT 1300 on Naboo. Wide screen, so you can see everything that was in the movie.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Widescreen (unless it was originally 4:3, obviously). 'Pan-and-Scan' is for people who don't like movies and don't know any better.

Whatever the AR the show is in. I don't mind the vertical black bars that result when a 4:3 (aka 'fullscreen') video is played on a 16:9 (widescreen) monitor or the horizontal ones when the situation is reversed. I DO severely mind the pan-n-scan crap when a 16:9 is mangled into 4:3 format...

Whatever the Orginal Aspect ratio is. For movies that usually means widescreen. But for a lot of anime and show's it's fullscreen. Which ever it was meant to be if I have the choice.

Definitely wide screen. The idea that I'm not seeing everything in the movie just annoys the shit out of me.

I'm surprized to see a vote for full screen on a scifi related board.

OAR. Full screen productions displayed in widescreen to look more "cinematic" irritate me just as much as pan and scan.

As for the black bars: I find I can tune them out in a few seconds. There have been times where I've turned on the TV and caught a movie being broadcast in widescreen, and not realized it until the credits rolled. Is there anyone who can't tune them out?

OAR all the way.

Interestingly B5 was shot 16:9, but its initial showing was pan and scan.

Definately OAR. Now if we could just get the next generation of HDTVs to be able to adjust between the two aspect ratios used in theaters we'll be perfect.

Widescreen is the only way. TRUE widescreen that is, not the fake kind. Fullscreen is nothing more than a bastardized version of the film and you loose half the picture as a result. If you ask me, Fullscreen should be banned from the shelves for good. People should be forced to view the movie as the director intended it or not at all.

Really ticks me off that the first three seasons of Farscape were filmed in FS. Atleast they filmed season 4 in WS.

Atleast HDTV is widescreen only. :)

I dunno...I don't really notice too much of a difference, not being a student of the cinema *cough SPANKY cough*. my thoughts work like this:
I bought a big, pretty TV, with a big, pretty picture.
*pops in a DVD*
WHAT THE HELL?! The guys are all fucking squished up! I'm not using half the damn screen!
*Access DVD options*
*Change to fullscreen*
Ahh, now I'm getting my money's worth.

I'm not going to say Fuck widescreen (OAR) but I will say simply that I prefer fullscreen. (I don't even think it's possible to view movies like LOTR in fullscreen...) and is that a good thing? I DON'T KNOW! I HAVE NO BASIS FOR COMPARISON!! Oh, sorry, ranting at myself there for a minute...
Anyway, if anyone would care to point something out to me I am missing in FS as opposed to OAR, I would love to hear it. (Specifics, please, no CAUSE FS IS STUPID, or any such nonsense.)

Pan-and-scan is for people who like paying the same amount of money for 75% of the total picture area.

WIDESCREEN OR DEATH!

The only time I've had fullscreen movies were when I was too young to care, or other people bought them for me.
