DRM for HDTV!!!

Post by Pu-239 »

Dammit. Stupid fucks. Hello, people? It would be on TV. Anyone could tape it. .
Consumer advocates have warned that consumers will have to buy new DVD players if they want to play programs that have been recorded on machines that recognize the digital flag. But agency officials stressed that that always happens when new technology hits the market.
 Those things are costly. Even I don't have a DVD player yet. Why should I buy yet another one a few years later?

You could just plug the composite or Y/C-output to a deck and record, but you'd get quality loss, even with DV. If you want a perfect copy of the ATSC bitstream and don't have the DRM-enabled hardware, you're screwed.

Fuck them. I'll record something off of TV if I damn well want to, and there isn't a damn thing they can do about it.

Not that it matters since there are already HDTV capable video capture cards out there, and have been out for over a year now. Hapaugge (sp?) was the first to release such a card, and it works VERY well from what I gather.

Pray they don't start using Macrovision on their programming. Unless you have some decently expensive equipment and know how to use it, the IRE shifting will drive your capture gear batty.

IIRC, Haupagge's first HD card only read a 480i SDTV signal. I'm not even sure if it could capture EDTV or HDTV streams.

Furthermore, those HD capture cards might not work if the recording stream has some sort of encryption on it.

Hands up if you think somebody with too much time on their hands will find a way around the "protection" scheme about a month after it's released.

True. :(

Nope. It was reviewed on Fresh Gear and it was clearly stated to read HDTV streams.

Again, true. However, there are ways around that.....but those are quite illegal.

Not if it's competently done, unlike the DVD encryption routine.

You mean like how CDs were done? Black markers and shift keys anyone? ;)

I just went the extra step and disabled autorun altogether, since it irritated me more often than not anyway.
