Anyone with half a brain can see what Uranium235 meant.

If they in fact exist the most likely explanation is low level exposure to nerve agents from the Iran Iraq and Gulf War.

The Gulf War Syndrome has been cited to be the result of Saddam's chemical cocktails and not the work of DU rounds as often thought.

DU is toxic is you get it on you or inhale it when it is in a powder like form. During my NBC training, we received some instruction on how to protect ourselves from it. The training was very little, as you will only find DU in a harmful state in few situations. For example, you should protect yourself if approaching a tank that some hog driver just wasted with his 30mm. There would be DU all over the place due to the rounds that impacted the armor. That is really the extend of situations in which you would have to worry about heavy matal toxicity from DU. Despite what some village idiots may say, DU is extremely safe in almost all applications.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

What is the probable explanation for the birth deformities in Iraq?
Poor sanitation, poor access to medicine, chemicals released by burning oil wells, remnants of nerve agents from the Iran/Iraq war (as Sea Skimmer said), contaminated water supply...

I was reading somewhere, which I can't forget but it isn't important,
that the reason the Americans don't move to Tungsten penetrators (maybe tungsten carbide, i doubt its pure tungsten) like the russians is because it costs too much, and that it doesn't sharpen itself as it goes through armor, although the drawback was it wasn't as heavy or strong.

cost cutting measure in the DU case so I heard.

DU was indeed used because it was cheaper. However in the last couple years tungsten has become much cheaper to machine and so both the US and Britain have decided to switch over to it for newly produced ammunition.

For the Soviets there was no economic need to switch over to DU, tungsten ammo predates the existence of DU. And modern Russia has no need to produce new sabot ammo since they've got a few hundred million rounds stockpiled.

Funny, nuclear shells were considered once in the 1950s, were deemed impractical, and never thought about again. Nuclear mines? That's a new one to me...

They were used by the "cavemen" in battlefield earth. 8)

My guess these DU conspiracy theorists are also Scientologists or at least get their reasearch from them. After all, M-16s with non existant DU 5.56 bullets were still radioactive 3000 years later as per Hubbard....

Well, in fairness, Planet of the Apes was caused by a nuclear war, though I'm not sure why that's considered an authoritative scientific source by these people.

but as I pointed out, the seem to think Battlefield Earth is scientific too.

Purhaps they confuse science fiction in the loosest sense with Science Fact?

Oh those birth defects exist alright. They are the result of the cumulative effect of years worth of malnutrition, disease, bad infrastructure (especially water and sewage) etc. etc.
