Development of Basic.
To what level has the written version of the language of Basic been developed, at least as far as we know, or have seen?
I am curious about this for a particular reason in regard to the accuracy of subjective terminology in the Star Wars universe. That is to say--if Basic is a language into which words can actually be written, and we have a way of determining the actual structure of words in Basic, could this not be particularly useful--if perhaps exceedingly difficult, as we would have to work backwards, as it were--in determining a more likely accurate meaning of certain words and terminology?
I understand that this might ultimately prove impossible even should it be possible to write words in the Basic; as much would depend on context when translating back English-language material. However, it could be a useful avenue of inquiry, and as of this time I am not up on the current level of development of Basic as a functional language.

Ok, but if Basic is the standard Language of the galaxy, and the Galactic Empire uses Aurabesh as the written language (I assume this from the computer displays in RoTJ from the Shuttle Tydrium/Executor scene) I've never even read out of a WEG sourcebook or anything like that.Illuminatus Primus wrote:No, WEG fucked it up.Darth Fanboy wrote:Isnt Aurabesh the written version of Basic?

im just sticking with the on screen stuff in RoTJ. And Im making an assumption that the EMpire would use the standard galactic alphabet and the standard galactic language, Basic and Aurabesh. Id assume that the two were easily interchangeable. If im wrong though, meh, no skin off my ass.Illuminatus Primus wrote:Oh, if you been those are the figures, yes. In that case, nothing of the RotJ 'Arubesh' letters has been determined beyond the observation that they're arranged into multi-letter groupings, implying that they're phonetic representations of Basic sounds. But that's about it, iirc.Darth Fanboy wrote:im just sticking with the on screen stuff in RoTJ. For the sake of the audience. The screeners forced Lucas to do it, fearing that it wouldn't be obvious to the viewers if it had been in an undecipherable language.Solid Snake wrote:The text on the tractor beam in SW:IV was in English, wasnt it?

Fanboy:
Basic is the Galactic standard spoken language.
Aurebesh is the Galactic standard alphabet.
Think of Basic as English, Chinese, or Russian; and Aurebesh as the Latin alphabet, Kanji, or the Cyrillic alphabet. That's how Basic and Aurebesh are related.

Now Spanky reread my previous quote and fuck off, I know what Basic and Aurabesh are.Fanboy wrote:im just sticking with the on screen stuff in RoTJ. If basic and Aurabesh are the galactic standards they would most likely be the Imperial standards for speech and writing as well wouldn't they? That being the case, one would assume that The Aurabesh alphabet and the Basic Language operate together. Looking at the Op you see:
which is the question ive been speculating on.Duchess of Zeon wrote:To what level has the written version of the language of Basic been developed, at least as far as we know, or have seen?
But im glad you're taking a personal interst in me, I still wont go out with you, I just dont like you that way cuddles.

I would suggest that you drop this fucking persecution/singling out attitude problem of yours, Fanboy. It is far past annoying now.
If you honestly think that I've been singling you out, you seriously need to get over your self-absorbed self...

Jesus Q. Christ at a Polish wedding, you really DO go apeshit just about everytime someone corrects you, don't you Fanboy? Someone tries to clarify something you say and what do you do? Use a personal agenda as an excuse to go apeshit. You say something and someone points out it isn't completely correct? You go rabidly hostile. Several people in the 'favorite mass-produced mobile suit' thread list MS that aren't exactly mass-produced, and which person is the only one to swear up a storm and act like they're exempt from constructive crtisicm? You.
Fucking hell Fanboy, I've tried to ignore it and let it slide after you at least had the sense tp take a break from the board for a while, but this has been going on too long, and against more than just one person. You really need to grow up and accept that everyone is going to receive some corrections and criticism in their lifetimes.

Well, isn't it possible that Aurabesh is not only the alphabet of SW basic? I mean it is like the Latin-1 code page which contains the latin based characters and can be used by different languages like german or hungarian. It would explain why some of the Aurabesh texts can be translated directly to english while others cannot. Maybe the computers in RotJ were switched to a different language. (Or they were switched to basic and the english texts are from a different language ...)
