I'm constantly getting these emails...

Post by Enigma »

One of the emails I constantly get is an email that claims to be from Microsoft telling me I need to update Windows and the next email says (under various headers) That it is returning an undeliverable email and it would state which email is undeliverable. That latest one came from Inet.

How do I get rid of this for I think it is a virus but when I do a scan I come up clean?

The virus is in the emails, not your system.

Just don't run the attachment.

I'm suprised people actually fall for that.

MICROSOFT DOES NOT SEND OUT E-MAIL ALERTS PEOPLE!

They expect YOU to visit Windows Update on your own to get them ON YOUR OWN.

The killer is in the little bit at the bottom, the

"please don't reply to this message......" bit.

That's always a dead giveaway that it's spam.

Anyway, if your e-mail program supports it you could try blocking incoming e-mails with that specific file attatched.

They do if you sign up for it, and those messages are PGP-signed, too.

I'm referring to unsolicited e-mails.

The best part is that I think there's a troll out there deliberately doing it to annoy us.

Can't. These emails I get are in my personal email account. No one here knows it except maybe MW (since I used my personal email to register my SDN account) and Tyralak. I use a fake email address over at ASVS.

But my guess is that it is from my ISP end. Before I switched ISPs and then switched back I had none of these emails but when I reactivaed my account, all of a sudden I get over 20 of these emails a day.

I suggest filtering your mail so that large E-mails are blocked at the source. How often do you need people to send you large files anyway? The average text message is only a few kB. If you limited messages to 100kB, you would eliminate these damned 430kB attachments (and yes, I've gotten them too).

That, and turn off HTML rendering in your e-mail client. You only want plain text to show up.

I scanned one of the emails once. One of the recipients was enigma@qqqq.qqqq.

It all started hitting everyone at ASVS the same time that all of Space Battles, and half of ASVS was handing dip-shit his ass in a debate on canon over at spacebattles.

YEah, well the timing of it, and the fact that everyone in ASVS started getting them, even other trolls like Weyon kinda rings more then a few paranonia bells.

Weird but the phony address I use is xtreme@qqqq.qqq. But how would they get my personal address since I've been careful with it?

Oh and I've made some rules in OE to delete those specific emails.

Did you ever post your e-mail address on the net at all? All it takes is for a spambot to see it and snag it.

I don't give it out to just anyone. Only to a select few. Unless the people whom I've given my email address has the virus. ??

Actually, that would make sense since now that I think of it, I've only started recieving those phony MS updates since I've started (sparsely) posting at ASVS again.

And now ASVS itself has received the phony MS updates.
