Mussel docks HMCS Corner Brook

HALIFAX (CP) - The lowly mussel is being blamed for the latest in a series of mechanical problems with one of Canada's new submarines.

HMCS Corner Brook was forced to return to port in Halifax last Friday after the submarine's propulsion system began to overheat. Lieut. Sue Stefko, a navy spokeswoman in Halifax, said Wednesday the sub's saltwater intake valves were clogged with mussels and other debris from the bottom of Halifax harbour.

"There was no indication of a problem before it left port," she said. "We do routine checks for this thing all the time because mussels grow in harbours . . . but we don't know why this happened now."

The intake valves allow sea water to enter the submarine and act as a coolant for large machinery.

Stefko said crews were taking the intake valves apart to remove the mussels and other debris. She didn't know how long the sub would be out of service.

The incident is the latest in a series of problems with Corner Brook, the newest of Canada's four Victoria-class submarines.

On June 3, the submarine was 110 kilometres south of Halifax when hundreds of litres of sea water accidentally flooded the vessel, forcing the crew to make an emergency surfacing. There were no injuries and the crew was able to pump out the water.

On July 1, 2002, the same sub was accidentally flooded with 1,500 litres of sea water while it was submerged 200 metres off the coast of Scotland.

Another Canadian sub, HMCS Windsor, was flooded with 3,000 litres of water while submerged of Halifax on March 4, 2002.

Canada has taken delivery of three of the four diesel-electric subs it is leasing from Britain for $812 million.

It's the start of an invasion!! Seafood will destroy Canada's navy, the penguins will sweep in from the north, and the moose will rise up in revolt against their Mountie masters, with horrifying consequences!!!

Wrong Hemisphere for the Penguins. (loL)

This just shows up stupid the Canadian Military is right now (and part of the reason that unlike my dad and granddad's and uncles, I did not do any military service out of high school/college)

You'd think you'd check a mulit-million dollar piece of hardware to see if the engines will jam in your own harbor

apparently they haven't learned an important lesson I learned in the US sub force..............screen doors may prevent skeeters from entering, but are ineffective against holding back water!

Or so they'd have you believe.

When you suck vast volumes of water into a small pipe your going to get occasionally problems. naval engine cooling systems and condenses have always been bountiful sources of trouble and this is really nothing exceptional and something that can affect any fleet. Plus its not like Canada's mighty fleet has anything better for diesel subs to do but sit in port.

The real problem with our military is that we don't know what we plan to use it for. With no sense of purpose, there is no coherence, no urgency for improvement, and no clear direction as to what should be bought and when.

Militaries have only one purpose, killing people and breaking things. Though it does help to know who and what you want to kill and break.

I can see Canadian Diesel boats being useful in littorial waters, although
they would have to run to the target area snorkeling most of the time,
basically they'd be useful in a war against shipping if we ever got into
a really big World War IV with China, or somesuch.

The USN would have driven the PLAN up the Yangtze to hide before the Canadian boats could reach the theater. And if they did show up before where done killing all those damn Romeo clones, they'd be more of a hamper then a help I'd expect.
