Some stuff I heard about Revolutions and ROTK

Post by Vympel »

My best fried works at a film company here in Sydney that does the work in ... er ... what's the term ... doesn't matter I'll make up my own: "splicing" the sound and actual print of the films for local consumption in the general region (south pacific/ asia etc)- they've been working on revolutions for the past few months- anyways, my friend has seen quite a bit on the film since he's the one doing the work, and he used these exact words:

"The fight between Smith and Neo is like DragonBall Z"

*shudder*

Reason I mention it is I remember Mike saying something derogatory about the prospect (I'm not too thrilled about it either)- who woulda thought huh?

In terms of ROTK- his company is still waiting to receive the prints- PJ is in an argument with New Line, and they've got to resolve it in two weeks. The full cut of ROTK is 6 hours long. The theatrical cut is 4 hours. PJ refuses to cut the theatrical version any more- if he does, he argues the movie just won't work plot wise. Too much stuff cut out and it won't be coherent or some such. Of course, New Line wants it cut down to 3 or thereabouts. This is insider stuff that has probably been mentioned on LOTR sites, but hearing it from my friend who does it for a living seemed confirmation to me.

6 HOURS?!

Damn...that'll be sweet if released on DVD that way.

As for Smith vs Neo being DBZ...I think you could surmise that given very little seem to be any chop socky and most shots are them flying about like dodos.

Yes, the Revolutions fight will be like DBZ. People getting blown away by punches, craters being created when impacting the ground, but no ki blasts or anything like that. I don't think this has to be a bad thing; granted, it was completely uninteresting in the TV series due to overkill and repetition, but DBZ style fighting isn't without its charm.

A 4-hour RotK is fine by me. Hell, people went and saw 4 hours of Gods and Generals, for fuck's sake.

That's just southern pride. I like LOTR, but I can't sit through a 4 hour movie. I would have to watch it in installments, hope for an intermission, or just duck out to take a pee and get some snacks in the middle.

As for DBZ-style fighting in "Revolutions", that will only have people asking why they didn't do it in "Reloaded". And I suspect that such fights will be really long, so that the excitement wears off and they become tedious.

The problem with DBZ fights was that they routinely took 5-10 episodes to go anywhere, and that it just got old to see Z Fighter A use Super Ultimate Ki Blast A, fail, use Super Ultimate Ki Blast B, fail, get his ass kicked, and watch the same process repeat itself over and over again with Z Fighters B, C, and D until Cell/Freeza/Buu went down. I don't think this will be as much of a problem with the Revolutions fight.

I'd sit through it easily, if for no other reason than I love the LotR series. Heck, if I can wade through the books, I can watch the movie. ;)

I really hope that they put the full versions in the DVDs.

As for Gods and Generals, that was just a good movie, IMHO, and not because of your so called 'southern pride.' And it did have an intermission, too. Heck, I can sit through Patton, and it is over 3 hours, with an intermission.

I do hope they put an intermission in there.

In any case, I'm sure PJ will put all 6 hours on the Extended Edition DVDs and I personally can't wait.

I guess you didn't notice the nice intermission in Gods and Generals. First

I'm just praying that after they release them all (LoTR not Matrix) then don't pull a Lucas and release "special editions" with even more footage than the extended editions. That would piss me off big!!!

Maybe not extra footage, but I'm betting on special editions for the Matrix.

LoTR doesn't have much stuff left that isn't going to be included in the DVDs already.

Six hours pre-theatrical cut? I'm not even sure if you could cram that on a dual-layer DVD without it looking bad, you'd have to use a dual-sided DVD or use two discs.

Why couldn't some of this stuff have been tacked on to the end of TTT? They left a lot of stuff out, they could have fit something in there.

I fucking predicted this two years ago when I heard that the shelob scene and the confrontation at Orthanc would be left for ROTK. How the FUCK could you possibly condense all of that (about 15-20% of TTT book) into ROTK itself and thats with them cutting out the scouring of the Shire which would already have Tolkien rolling in his grave.

Don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer that Jackson is doing what I never thought was possible, bringing the trilogy to the screen and doing it right, but he simply left too much of TTT for ROTK. I suspected this movie wuld be the longest for that reason (4 fucking hours is going to be a bitch to sit through)

My ass is going to be hurting after that movie...

That's not unheard-of. They used two discs for the 3 1/2 hour Extended Edition of FoTR. Even so, 6 hours would be pushing the limits of two single-layer, single-side discs. They may end up having to use 2 dual-sided discs, or one dual-side and one normal disc.

I actually didn't care for that part of the book much. The real climax to the action had taken place already, and the whole thing seemed like a really dragged-out denouement.
Don't hate; appreciate!

I thought it was a great end to the book. I mean, the whole time they were gone, what did the little hobbits fantacize (Bah, spelling) about? Going home to the Shire. It was an awesome commentary on the ever changing nature of the world in general. Even the timeless Shire. It also showed how much the Hobbits changed going from pascifist wimps to asskicking mini-warriors. I loved it.

Are you sure they're gonna edit out the Shire sequence? There was a production pic posted a while back showing the 4 hobbits standing in the middle of a field, before it was taken down at the request of the studio.( With Merry and Pippin in their respective armour). Although it doesn't really say much, about this rumour, it was a pretty sombre pic, with a grey, nasty, cloudy sky. For some odd reason both Merry and Pippin looked the taller of the four......

The fights in the DBZ anime are extremely long and drawn out because Toei basically converted each manga chapter into an episode. The problem being that a chapter isn't supposed to take 22 minutes. The main idea of the DBZ fights, that of people flying around and beating eachother up with more energy released than in all of WW2 is awesome visually, and I don't see how using it in Revolutions could be bad.
