*Hack* Cough* Massive Fire in San Diego County
So, Lonestar gets up this morning bright and early to go topside and get a smoke on the Fantail, like he does every damn morning.
I step outside around 8ish, and lo and behold it looks as if the Gates of Hell have opened up somewhere north of the city. after Polluting my lungs with the smoke of my choice, I walk my happy ass out to my car, to see it pretty well covered with soot and ash. The Radio says they're evacuating everyone and their brother from around Miramar and Ramona. I hope everyone lives.
But most of all, I hope it rains. My car looks like a complete bag of ass.

Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."
Thousands are being evecauated. Two shipmates who live off ship just showed up, saying they were recommended to evacuate. Even inside I can taste the smoke.

My area's just had a fairly big brush fire. Some homes under development burned down. The silliest explanation for this that I've heard is "Islamic terrorists."

Update: There are now TWO brush fires in my area. One is fairly big: you can see this mushroom cloud like thing just behind a mountain.
The other is HUGE. Try mushroom-cloud with three times the width and twice the height.
Good thing they're both pretty far away from where I actually am.

Well, you people keep alert and don't hesitate to evacuate--possibly you should prepare any vehicles you have drivers for by filling them with valuables right now if you are near one of the fires. Fires in that area, as I understand, are not slow-moving like forest-fires at all, but can rapidly approach depending on wind conditions, giving comparatively little time for escape.

Fortunately, I'm right here on the waterfront, so in the event of a fire, my ship will probably be told to set sea and anchor detail and float out to the bay or something.

Not that bad.. and I live in the ubran area and the only "nature" we have are big rocks.. those won't catch on fire. But I'm thinking about starting a fire near my administration building where they keep all my records..The Duchess of Zeon wrote:Well, you people keep alert and don't hesitate to evacuate--possibly you should prepare any vehicles you have drivers for by filling them with valuables right now if you are near one of the fires. Look at how far the smoke extends to the south. Simply amazing.

Nothing like an atom bomb to smoother a forest fire.

The smoke from these damned fires is a ways aways from where I live in South orange county, yet the pool in the backyard was full of ash and black crusties today and the sky was a beautiful shade of grey. reflects my mood perfectly.

No, this is what you get for building homes in hazardous fire areas.
EDIT: like those idiots that like to buy beachside houses overlooking a cliff for a shitload of money, then wonder what the hell happened when the ground underneath falls out and the house goes down the cliff, smashing into a thousand itty pieces. Bwahahahah, Erosion is natures form of vengeance kids.

I live in Simi Valley.
Sunday morning, at 4:45 AM while driving to work, Simi looked like Hell, or maybe just Purgatory.
The sky was dark, thick and black, without the usual cheery backlit glow the streelights shining in the background. The air was thick with smoke, yet the valley was well lit with the red light of flame! Like a neon lamp 5 miles long, and 50 feet wide, (The size of the fireline that was VISIBLE, yet less than half of the totalblaze) it wasn't intence, but the aggregate amount of light the fires were putting out was greater than the normal output of the streetlamps, by at least 3 times!
The normal sodium orange hue my city once was, was replaced by a nightmarish bloody red. The city was strange, so very well lit, in such an alien color. Like being transported to a world with a red giant star.
At 8:00, I turned off the outside lights. At 10:45, I turned them back on, as it only got darker that day until I left at 2:00 PM.
Staying indoors for a few hours, the fire had shifted, and I was no longer directly downwind, so we got some fresh air later that day. My bud and me hiked onto a local hill, and observed the flames. Flames shooting into the air for hundreds of feet into the air as it whipped through canyons.
The worst has passed today, burning around the city, and scorching a few houses on the perimeter. As it is driven south Chatsworth and Wood Ranch are now in peril.
Good news for any old movie buffs. (Or Manson Family fans)Both Hopetown and Corriganville Park were saved.

Agreed. I saw the news reports, and the first thing to come to mind was: "again?" It seems that SoCal goes up once every five years. Or just long enough for the people to forget what happened last time.Darth Fanboy wrote:No, this is what you get for building homes in hazardous fire areas.
If anything were to make me move there, I'm building a moat around my house.
