Best Gun?
This morning I was contemplating purchasing a new rifle and it gave me an idea for a thread. What are people's favorite guns (military of civilian)?
These would be mine:
Pistol: H&K SOCOM (.45 ACP)
Submachine Gun: H&K MP5SD (9mm)
Sniper Rifle: Tactical Operations Tango-51 (7.62mm)
Assault Rifle: H&K G36 (5.56mm)
Shotgun: Franchi SPAS-12 (12-gauge)
Yes, I really, really like H&K guns (and I almost put in a PSG-1 for sniper rifle) but what can I say? Anybody else have some favorites to share?

Well, I love my Sig Sauer p225. A nice compact little beast with great accuracy.
I would love to have an mp5.. but this is damn california.. so dammit.
Realistically for a rifle I would probably get a Gustaf 6.5 Swedish Mauser. Those things are soo beautiful and accurate.. though I'd probably have to add on some sights. But still.. *drool*

I agree that HKs are the coolest looking guns especially the G3, and seem to be favored by special forces, which leads me to believe they are superior.
For Shotguns I'd go with the Bennelli model used by the Navy SEALs. Its fully automatic. That or the Pancor Jackhammer.
I'm a Quaker, so I shouldn't be talking about how guns are cool.

The Jackhammer never entered production, although it did finish production. There are only 2 completed ones in existence.Bertie Wooster wrote:That or the Pancor Jackhammer.

If you ask me, and if I could have ANY handgun I wanted, It would be a trusty M9. The weapon I had in the Army was fucking bulletproof (you konw what I mean) I dragged that thing through jungle foliage, muck, sand, anything you can imagine, and it never once jammed. Reliability is my deciding factor.
for a rifle, my trusty M16A2. Not an M4 and not just any A2, but the A2 I carried before I got my M4. I loved that weapon.
also an M-60 and
well, that's really it. I could put the fear of God into anyone foolish enough to try anything stupid with pretty much those three weapons! >:-)

What are you talking about? A 9mm has plenty of stopping power compared to a 10mm or .45, especially when you factor in that an M9 has almost no kick and can let off three to four rounds in the time it would take for a .45 to fire two.YT300000 wrote:Bah, crap stoppage.Chardok wrote:If you ask me, and if I could have ANY handgun I wanted, It would be a trusty M9.
If you shoot someone with a .357, they will probably survive (not counting head, crotch shots, etc.) and possibly still come at you. A .40 will solve this problem. The Kernel wrote:What are you talking about? Actually a .357 Magnum round has a hell of a lot more stopping power then a .40 calibur or even a .45 under certain conditions.YT300000 wrote: If you shoot someone with a .357, they will probably survive (not counting head, crotch shots, etc.) and possibly still come at you. There IS no single best gun. There are good all around guns, but no gun is a true jack of all trades, and those that are jacks of some trades, don't really excell at everything they are decent at. That being said, everyone has their favorites.
Rifles-
Automatic/Assault Rifle: M14/M1 (basically the same action, except the M14 is magazine fed and capable of fully automatic fire, and the M1 fires the larger .30-06 while the M14 fires the .308)
Bolt: Mauser M98 (Winchester M70 Pre-1964 runs a VERY close second)
Sniper: Barrett M82 (what's not to like about 12.7mm of precision destruction?)
Machine Gun-
Current: M-240
Classic: MG-42
Shotgun-
Automatic: Remington 1100 (Incredibly tough gun, not glamorous, but definitely gets the job done, and done well)
Pump: Winchester M1987
Pistol-
Revolver: Colt Peacemaker
Automatic: Colt 1911A1

Not a .357. A 9mm, yes, but not a .357 Mag. However, the .40SW is a good all around caliber.YT300000 wrote:If you shoot someone with a .357, they will probably survive (not counting head, crotch shots, etc.) and possibly still come at you. The only reason the military still uses 9 mms is as a tip of the hat to NATO. Even police have progressed to .38.

Most police use the aforementioned .40 Smith and Wesson, iirc.YT300000 wrote:But not most of the time. The Kernel wrote:Actually a .357 Magnum round has a hell of a lot more stopping power then a .40 calibur or even a .45 under certain conditions.YT300000 wrote: If you shoot someone with a .357, they will probably survive (not counting head, crotch shots, etc.) and possibly still come at you. .357 Magnum will KILL a man reliably, and FAR outclasses the stopping power of the piddly 9 mm Parabellum FMJ.

While it's true that the 9mm round isn't a great military pistol round, it is a great for people who want something small, accurate and with almost no kick. It has a lot higher one-hit immobilization rate then the .22, and none of the kick associated with the .44, .45 or .357 magnum. It should also be mentioned that 9mm rounds are much cheaper than the larger calibur bullets.YT300000 wrote: But not most of the time.

I personally prefer something a little larger (like the SOCOM, or its civilian equivalent the USP), but when I'm target shooting, my 9mm Beretta with its 15-round clips are my favorite.
Handguns:
SA Revolver: Freedom Arms .454 Casull.
The .454 will take down anything in North America with the possible exception of Bigfoot.
DA Revolver: S&W Model 66 w/round butt and snub barrel.
Not as tough as a Ruger GP, but with a better trigger and concealable.
SA Auto: Colt 1911A1 or Browning HP
Enough said.
DA Auto: Glocks.
Longarms:
Submachine Gun: 1928 Thompson w/ vertical foregrip and L drum.
The classic 'Chicago Typewriter'.
Assault Rifle: SIG 550
I want some of that legendary Swiss quality and precision.
Battle Rifle: FN FAL
Proven the world over.
Precision Rifle: Walther WA2000 in .300 Winchester Magnum.
It just looks cool, and being a German weapon, I bet it functions equally well.
Shotgun: Remington 1100 (semiauto) or 870 (pump).
Why not stay with a proven winner?
and as a 'covert' weapon, an integrally supressed Ruger Mark II .22 pistol.

As far as stopping power goes, the top rated one shot stoppers are the 230 grain .45 ACP Federal HydraShok and the 125 grain .357 Magnum load.
IIRC, the .40 is right below those two in one shot stops.
But the 9mm is a potent defense round if you choose the proper bullet.
I use 124 grain HydraShoks in my 9mm Glock carry gun and I have no concerns about the supposed 'lack' of power. If I need a round with more power than a .357, .45, or 9mm of proper loading, I brought a pistol to a rifle fight.
Here's a quick chart of handgun stopping power. Pay attention to the 'One Shot Stop' column, as that information comes from Evan Marshall's examination of the results of police shootings throughout the US.
