Spanky? No offense, but art is as art does. If it's a work of art, then it's a work of art, no matter what it looks like (dresses made of decaying beef included.)Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Honestly?Kuja wrote:Hey, what do you'all think of this? I call it 'Watching You'

Honestly, I don't think that it qualifies. It's not even art, to tell you the truth.

I'm very sorry, I was under the impression that we were having a little fun submitting a pic for Halloween. I didn't realize it had to be beautiful, meaninful, ART.It's not even art, to tell you the truth.

In my opinion the addition of the text significantly weakens it as an art piece. And no offence intended, but it's also extremely crude and doesn't look like anything but two segmented rings.Beowulf wrote:Spanky? No offense, but art is as art does. Jesus, fuck sorry, I'm just having a lousy evening and a rather bad headache. Excuse me if I sound belittling and confrontational.
EDIT: But Kuja, please keep in mind that this is a contest, not a gallery. If you just make something for the sake of just putting it up purely to have fun and don't actually care about the contest, then in my personal opinion, don't really bother.
Sorry, again, I feel like shit, and am just getting this out and not caring if it sound polite or other crap.

Ok, here is the very first Work in Process image that I've made.
Right now, it is a very rough right now, as I haven't begun refining detail into it until I've finished roughing out the basic form. As you can see, I've begin shaping out the orbital, malar and zygomatic bones on the skull. Right now, the forehead is still a bit sloping, so it looks a bit more Neanderthal, but I'm going to be adding serious frontal bone, frontal eminences, and superciliary ridge action (as I will be adding horns). Also, I don't have included there the nasal bones and cavity yet. Note that it will have exaggerated features because it's going to be pretty monsterous a skull.
Once I'me done adding features, I'll scrape it nice and hit it with isopropyl alcohol to make it bone polished.

Oh, cry me a goddamn river, Spanky. I don't care if you got hit by a fucking truck, you still can't unilaterally dismiss submissions.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Jesus, fuck sorry, I'm just having a lousy evening and a rather bad headache. Excuse me if I sound belittling and confrontational.
Oh yes, my mistake, we can't just submit a picture because we're interested in the topic, we have to conform to Spanky The Dolphin's rules of what qualifies and what doesn't.EDIT: But Kuja, please keep in mind that this is a contest, not a gallery. If you just make something for the sake of just putting it up purely to have fun and don't actually care about the contest, then in my personal opinion, don't get invovled.
I don't give a flying fuck about whether you're polite or not. I DO give a fuck about you arbitrarily dismissing my fucking submissions because you don't fucking think that they're ART.Sorry, again, I feel like shit, and am just getting this out and not caring if it sound polite or other crap.
Oh I get it: Spanky thinks that only TALENTED people should be allowed to make a submission. Never mind whether you're interested, you're only allowed to submit a pic if you're TALENTED.In my opinion the addition of the text significantly weakens it as an art piece. And no offence intended, but it's also extremely crude and doesn't look like anything but two segmented rings.
Get off your high fucking horse and let me make my goddamn submissions, Spanky. At least Rye offered some REAL feedback instead of just saying "It's crude. Go away."

Really, I think that anyone should be able to submit something of any quality, as long as it's halloween related. I don't necessarily think that Kuja's picture in question is a fantastic piece, it does fit the definition of art and it is Halloween related, so I say it's fine. In the end, we can let the voters judge it's quality. And to be blunt, Spanky, his entry is more in line with the theme of the contest than yours was, which wasn't even halloween related at all.

Then be less abstract. After all, Jackson Pollock was nice, but after a while, you want a Rembrandt because abstraction gets boring.

Kuja, I think the one thing I might say about your image is that theres a lot of empty black space. what youve got going there probably doesnt need more than the size of a standard sig banner (or maybe a bit larger than that). That plus a little detail on or around the eyes and you gotcherself some nice MSPaint art.
THe words, eh, not sure you e ven need them really, if you are gonna use them id use a more elaborate lookin font if you have any, otherwise you could just use Italics on a reg'lar font, then maybe make it in a greay so that theres more colors to it, Iunless youre using just black and white its hard to pull off using two colors and even with Black and white theres always various shades of grey ja?

Well, just to be controversial I'm wrking on an image that might possibly be construed as Halloween related, or possibly just horrible and a tiny bit scary. I made a jack-o-lantern for it, and then today while playing around with Lightwaves hair plugin I thought it might be nice to try a wolfman or something too. I've found a low-poly, untextured wolfman model at 3dtotal.com, converted it to lightwave format and have begun cleaning it up for use. This is half an hours cleaning up and working on the fur, which took a hellish 7.5 minutes to render for a poxy 640 x 480 image with 2 lights. Fur is murder, it really is, I have mo clue how long the final image will take to render with it's volumetric lights and muc higher resolution. Anyway, here's Fido...

I was going to have him either...
a) In mid leap with his jaws open heading straight for the camera, which will be slightly tilted and with a wid-angle lens for that Marvel Comics look.
b) Crouched ready to pounce from some high wall or cliff.
c) In mid throat-rending slash, with blood being flung from the partially visible victims throat.
d) At home making the Jack o' Lantern.

As a whole, it needs a better usage of layout and space. Right now the eyes are too far over to one side (while the text is too far over to the other), which really disrupts visual balance. I don't know what you want to do with all of that black space in the middle, though; as long as you want people's attention to be drawn there, and the rest of the imiage is generally balanced with it, be my gues to leave it there.Kuja wrote:Hey, what do you'all think of this? I call it 'Watching You'
This is the one thing I'm going to have to back Spanky up on. If Kuja's fits fine with Halloween for merely color scheme and possibly the 'spooky' message that's halloween-esque, why doesn't color sceme apply to abstract art that invokes the same kind of halloween-esque 'spookiness' that some text does? Wasn't the whole point of picking a broad theme was so people weren't restricted to drawing specific types of subjects and instead focus on just making art that can tie into the theme in general? I don't see the point in trying to turn a Pollock into a Rembrandt when it's supposed to be a Pollock in the first place.Gil Hamilton wrote:And to be blunt, Spanky, his entry is more in line with the theme of the contest than yours was, which wasn't even halloween related at all.
Now then, if only I could find my Mr Thrifty 1/2 scale skull and some specific models, I could finish taking the rest of the photos I need to put together an art piece...

Too soon. I don't see a problem with the original date. Remember that they don't celebrate Thanksgiving outside of the US, so we shouldn't concern ourselves with that as a benchmark.
If it has to be changed, the 10th would be better.

The Fifth sounds better to me than the fifteenth. although the tenth would be fine if there is going to be no November Contest.
