I dont think COF are sellouts really...they're somewhat popular but they've yet to have a hit single or music video or anything like that. I think the reason people are accusing them of that is because lately they've become very trendy amongst the nu-metal crowd. I was never really fond of them anyway though....
For great metal/glam-rock check out Japanese rockers Loudness. Their later stuff is a bit too glam rockish for my tastes but their earlier stuff, particularly Thunder in the East is great. They were the premier rock band in Japan for years.Anyone who is into Glam rock needs to look at Rachel Stamp, and King Adora.

In the metal genre, it's very easy to get labeled a sell-out. Just look at that Amazon.com reviewer who claimed that Arcturus and Emperor were little better than Backstreet Boys. (unsurprisingly, he was a fan of Graveland - a band whose "RRRAAAGGHH! I'm a viking warrior!" shtick and "death to sellouts!" rhetoric would have earned them a reputation as the Black Metal equivalent of Manowar if it weren't for their political views... and that's before we mention Graveland's songtitles)zombie84 wrote:I dont think COF are sellouts really...they're somewhat popular but they've yet to have a hit single or music video or anything like that. In fact, some of us metalheads are ridiculously anally retentive about what "true metal" is. I think it started with Manowar printing "Death To False Metal" in the liner notes of Into Glory Ride - little did they know what they unleashed.
Some Thrash Metal purists even bash any attempt to innovate the genre and insist all metal should sound exactly like it did in 1985.
In some corners of the metalhead subculture it actually makes you "cooler" to look like a KISS reject or extra from a bad vampire movie.Rye wrote:(plus their ubergoth appearence probably contributes to this as they'll undoubtedly think oif manson when they see them)

Hmm, my stuff is a little more modern and leaning towards the emo genre (Because my friend recommended a bunch...)
Atreyu: Rock. It's pretty heavy...
Cursive: Emo/Hardcore. Very good...
E Nomine: I believe somebody mentioned this already... German techno/classical.
Lacrimosa: German Gothic.
Nightwish: Finnish rock. Amazing female vocals.
Static-X: Industrial/Thrash? It's very hard to classify, kinda straddles the border.
Thursday: Emo/Punk-ish. Local band friend recommended... Try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thursday_(band)
Zeromancer: Eurotrash. I believe Innerbrat mentioned this.

Nightwish is one of my fav bands. Great euro power metal that stands out from the hordes of Helloween-imitators. Good synth use, great riffs and atmospherics and an absolutley angelic vocalist. Definitly one of the top power metal acts in the world right now; hell, they're practically an institution in their native Finland. You might be interested in Stratovarius or Sonata Arctica for similarly flavored music, but of course the angelic vocals of Tarja are a distinction that only Nightwish can claim.

I mentioned both of these. And I might add in Depeche Mode, but that's on a per-person basis, as well as Dimmu Borgir.Exonerate wrote:Hmm, my stuff is a little more modern and leaning towards the emo genre (Because my friend recommended a bunch...)

could the singers voice be anymore annoying?
My (nearly) girlfriend kissed that guys arm at a concert... she's strange like that, that may have something to do with my dislike of them lol.
i'll take a look at cursive, although emo isn't a favoured genre of mine, i can put up with some stuff, if its the heavier end, the stuff where they cry into the mic just pisses me off.

Great music, not generally well-known that I think many here would like:
Portishead- Drum&bass experimental with excellent vocals, great make-out music
Pixies- only band I know of to write good music about incest, and feeling crazy ( mentioned aleady I think)
Supreme Beings of Leisure-funky/groovy modern lounge music
Run Lola Run soundtrack-surprisingly exceptional fast-paced electronica
Mary Timony-vocalist with medieval sounding tunes
Stereolab, sonic youth, pavement, folk implosion, dinosaur jr, guided by voices- all awesome progressive/exp. stuff

Anyone here know Collider? There's a song I think many, many, MANY people on this site would love... *scampers off to find the lyrics and/or website info*
Oh, and this is how they describe themselves:
EDIT: Ta-da!!!! The song "Pal," from their album "Physics."
Today I sat with three of my friends
Discussing herpes over lunch -
Sean said he had it and was taking medication to relieve it.
Eventually the conversation turned to AIDS
I just smiled and said, "Guys, I'm not afraid of AIDS
'Cause I don't use IV drugs,
And I don't know a single girl who would fuck me"
I'm a pal, I'm a shoulder, I'm an ego boost
And there's nothing between my legs
I'm a 24-7 complaint line
And I'm an all-purpose backup plan
If I meet one more girl who just wants to be friends
Man, I'm off to the monastery
And the only social disease I've contracted is bitterness
Sean says, "Hey, it's a dangerous world -
I think maybe I should slow down
'Cause I don't know which of those ten girls gave me herpes."
I said, "Sean, you're a dick. Man, I can't believe
You've had sex with ten times as many women as me--
But then again, that's not exactly true, is it?
'Cause ten times zero is still zero"
I'm a pal, I'm a shoulder, I'm an ego boost
And there's nothing between my legs
I'm a 24-7 complaint line
And I'm an all-purpose backup plan
If there's one thing in the world that turns off a girl
It's a straight up honest guy
And the only social disease I've contracted is bitterness
I can't believe there was ever a time when I did not know your name
Now it's years and years and years and years
And I wish I'd never heard your name
And we can talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk for years
And I can sing this song a million times, but this is all the woman hears:
Blah blah blah ya ya ya da da da blah blah blah [entire verse like this]
I'm a pal, I'm a shoulder, I'm an ego boost
And there's nothing between my legs
I'm a 24-7 complaint line
And I'm an all-purpose backup plan
If I meet one more girl who just wants to be friends
Man, I'm off to the monastery
And the only social disease I've contracted is bitterness...
(The last chorus is actually a little different, but as I'm at work and not at home, I can't listen to it and write down the correct words for y'all. Sorry!)
Oh, and this is how they describe themselves:
Still looking for the lyrics to fully entice you, but here's the website: http://www.collider.com/Collider wrote: We are:
Four people who make music.
Together, separately. By any means necessary.
Unconstrained by genre.
Unfazed by progress.
Unmoved by fashion.
Yesterday:
Techno-metal before it was cool.
Rock 'n roll asskickers in a mopey grunge age.
High-concept progheads. Bubblegum. Country-pop. Zydeco. Doo-wop.
Today:
Electro-punk with an anti-folk edge.
Tomorrow:
Anything we want.
Come with us.

Well, Dimmu Borgir is considered about as commercial as a Black/Death Metal band can get. Because of this, many metalheads decry them as posers and sellouts.

Those into Black Metal probably know of Dimmu Borgir even if they don't listen to DB. (In fact, I think that most Black Metal fans regard Dimmu Borgir as sellouts)
However, you can easily come across a Thrash Metal purist who has no clue who or what DB is.

Dimmu Borgir are probably the biggest black metal band in the wolrd today, but having said that, Black metal is pretty much restricted to word-of-mouth; its not like they're mainstream by any means. Within the metal community they're probably one of the more commerical bands but that isnt saying much. I think most people, nu-metallers included, have heard their name thrown around, even if they havent heard their music.
I should mention for alternative-rock lovers to check out The Gandharvas and Placebo for cool, laid-back rock tunes with Geddy Lee soundalike vocalists.
And special mention to canadian folk-tinged-alternative-rock heros Spirit of the West. Great stuff from them, very folkish and melodic. The song Home for a Rest is the greatest drinking song of all time--its got fiddles and everything. Makes you wanna go and get drunk. DL it, its fairly popular. For the black metal equivalent, check out Finntroll--black metal polka music about trolls. Weird but cool.
