ATTN: Dell Inspiron 3800 Laptop recalled after class action

Post by BrYaN19kc »

If you own a Dell Insprion 3800 Laptop - a class action lawsuit has been filed which extends the warrantee. The lawsuit covers defective keyboards on the laptops where the 8-i-k-,-del keys stop functioning. Usually you can take the keyboard out and reset it and it will work again for a while.

Dell has claimed over and over that there was not a problem, but after a class action was filed Dell has now decided that you can call their service department and make arrangements to send your laptop in and have it fixed at no charge!

The class action ONLY covers the Inspiron 3800.

Just thought people ought to know.

It's a very good laptop, but this keyboard problem is a reall pain in the butt!

I was told by a dell tech that when the 8-i-k keys were bad it was the motherboard. This was for the Latitude CP class laptops. I had quite a few go bad, but they always sent another system board. Good to know, just glad I have a Thinkpad for my personal machine.

On the Inspiron, the keyboard touches the motherboard and causes it not to work. They have replaced the keyboard and added a spacer. It works great!!!!

Like you, my next laptop purchase is going to be an IBM. They are better machines. Dell laptops seem to keep getting cheaper and cheaper with each model change. GRRRRR.....

Dell's Latitude line typically has better support since it's their business line, and they don't want to piss of business customers.

IBM, while built solidly, has a rather commanding price premium.

Actually, Our university used to by all Inspirons for staff fortunate to get one from the datacenter. When this last round of Inspirons/Latitudes are cycled through, we are going to IBM for staff.

Actually, the IBM isn't that much high than the Dell's any more. A loaded Dell at $3200 is pretty much the same as the IBM (give or take the extra batter).

Inspirons suck, it's the Latitudes that are usually built more decently ;)

Well, I meant for most consumers it's more expensive - IBM has no 'consumer' line of products so they don't really compete with all of those Sager clones that everyone sells.
