Atheists organize march along Mall

THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published 10/2/2002
An atheistic group is hoping 3,000 people will attend its Godless Americans March on Washington next month to counter what it says is an increasing influence of religion in public life.
American Atheists, a Parsippany, N.J., group founded by Madalyn Murray O'Hair, is calling for atheists of "all stripes" to "demand a seat at the table" by marching on the National Mall at 11 a.m. Nov. 2. It was Mrs. O'Hair's 1962 U.S. Supreme Court case Murray v. Curlett that banned prayer from public schools.
"[Nonreligious people] are American citizens entitled to the same rights as religious people," said Ron Barrier, national spokesman for American Atheists.
Organizers say they are not sure how many will attend because "it is hard to organize nonbelievers because they are not led by a shepherd; they are not sheep lining up waiting to be sheared," Mr. Barrier said. They listed 3,000 people on a permit from the National Park Service.
American Atheists says marchers will include atheists, freethinkers and humanists, as well as two satanist groups — the Order of Perdition and the United Satanic Convenire. Some groups protested inclusion of the satanists.
"This is supposed to be a march of those without religion," said Ed Buckner, executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism, which will also be represented at the march. "We don't believe there is Satan or any other god."
However, American Atheists stands firm. "We think we made the right decision," said President Ellen Johnson, explaining that the satanists are also "godless." She added, "This will be a little party for atheists."
Mr. Buckner, who will speak at the event, estimates 25 to 250 people from his organization will attend.
"We are the biggest and the best of any nonreligious groups," he said.
"The key thing here is defending nonbelievers in religion," said Tom Flynn, editor of Free Inquirer, a publication of Council for Secular Humanism.
Organizers hope the Godless Americans March on Washington will capitalize on grass-roots support to promote activism of nonreligious people.
The demonstration will include speeches and entertainment. The march will be contained to the pedestrian path on the Mall from the Washington Monument to the west side of the Capitol. Marchers are expected to take 20 to 30 minutes to walk the seven to 10 blocks.
California lawyer Michael Newdow, whose lawsuit challenged the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, is scheduled to recite a secular rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance.
Other speakers include August Brunsman from the Secular Student Alliance; Kathleen Johnson, president of the Military Atheists and Freethinkers; Frank Zindler, editor of the American Atheist Press; Jim Strayer of Humanists of Florida; and Bobbie Kirkhart, president of the Atheist Alliance. Several others are listed at www.godlessamericans.org, the official march Web site.
Chris Harper, creator of the satiric Landover Baptist Church (www.landoverbaptist.org), also will speak. Rock bands Overlord and UniversalDice.com will provide entertainment.
American Atheists has sent letters to all members of Congress asking them to attend. None has responded so far.

*beats head against wall*
As if fundie idiots don't all ready equate atheism/agnosticism with devil worship because it doesn't involve grovelling before God...they are going to bring Satanic Cults into the march?!!
And the idea that they are "Godless" is a rather pathetic excuse of semantics, they do have religion, and are quite quickly going to destroy any credibility the march may have had.

That said.... what the fuck is up with Satanism anyway? Like people need an excuse to fuck like rabbits.

Personally, the inclusion of Satanic groups make me think it is little more than an immature shot at Christianity.
I have a tendency to dislike it when atheists go out of their way to take a shot at my religion, and then claim justification because some fucking moron like Falwell blasts them regularly. I don't blast the ideal of atheism as a whole, so I get irritated when things like this happen.

Yep. They're included just as a stab at Christians.

The only Satanists I'm familiar with are the LaVeyans, and they do not worship Satan as an entity like God. They see Satan more as an archetype for their beliefs. I've never heard of the Satanist groups mentioned in that article, and so do not know if they are LaVeyan or not.Evil Jerk wrote:How are Satanists godless?

So if they don't really believe in Satan, why be Satanists?XaLEv wrote:The only Satanists I'm familiar with are the LaVeyans, and they do not worship Satan as an entity like God. Tactics like what? Organizing a march?Raoul Duke, Jr. wrote:And these tactics are exactly why people get the perception that Atheists have basically built their ideal around hatred of religion rather than the embracing of reason.
It is generally accepted if you openly display your belief, so why shouldn't it be accepted to display your non-belief (which also is only a belief btw).

No, the tactic I'm referring to is inviting Satanists along, thus taking an intentional and juvenile shot at Christians. That's what I was referring to.Cpt_Frank wrote:Tactics like what? Now, I don't get this march. They think Satanists are "godless", and they probably won't agree on anything, and they will end up making fools of themselves. I don't think such a march is a good idea for recognition of Atheism, just like the Million Mom March didn't work to get stricter gun laws in effect.

LeVayan Satanism is merely atheism with a bit of color intentionally to jab christians and mock their herd mentality. Go to ChurchOfSatan.com and read their info before you people go about saying that satanists worship satan.
Now, there are some little antisocial gothic fucktards who think its cool to "worship the devil" but they're just as stupid as the christians they claim to hate. They have nothing to do with Le Vay.
Quick Primer:
"Satan" is representative of humans natural self. Much of christianity teaches restraint from our emotions and desires, from "satan". Christianity places importance in god, not in the self.
Satanism however places importance in ones personal satisfaction. As well as, ofcourse, logical thinking.
Plus, black and red suits, shaven heads, and goatees all look really snazzy

Gee, that sounds almost... admirable. Until we reread:Satanism however places importance in ones personal satisfaction. As well as, ofcourse, logical thinking.
And then there's:LeVayan Satanism is merely atheism with a bit of color intentionally to jab christians and mock their herd mentality.
Now, clarify this for me, becuase I am, after all, the Village Idiot (heh heh heh)... how does this dismiss the juvenile move of including Stainists (oops, typo, so solly) in an Atheist march? Now, there are some little antisocial gothic fucktards who think its cool to "worship the devil" but they're just as stupid as the christians they claim to hate.
