Those were tornado drills. :P

I have a certain flare for drama and might have as a result worded my post poorly, sorry. :(

It would have been better to ask if fear of nuclear annihiliation was infact a concern among American kids during the Cold War, according to you it definately was.

Though I'm not an American, I was born in '85, and wasn't even told about communism, much less the nuclear stuff till I was 10.

I don't know about some of you but i still worry about it...

Actually, I just had a dream about it this morning. It was kinda like the scene from Terminator 3...I was standing in a field and saw all these missiles shooting off into the air. I started to run away, since I was near a city I knew would get hit (I think it was Denver) but I realized that I had no chance. So I just kinda sat down...saw the nuke explode...watched the shockwave come toward me and....I woke up. Now I don't have dreams like this often at all but I do maybe once or twice a year.

By the way, I was born in '85. As a child I really never knew about that type of stuff...but whenever I saw a "Fallout Shelter" sign I got scared. BTW I don't know why I was in a field and then found myself next to a city...you know how dreams are they don't make sense lol

Here in California.. we of course all know the duck and cover drill in the event of an earthquake and one time it did come in handy when a big one hit during school and books started flying.

As for nuclear annihilation.. well, back at home (not here at college), we live a few blocks from the Rand corporation.. so essentially I believe my ass would automatically be toast.

You kidding, I was born in 1986, grew up watching TNG, and throughout Elementary school and Middle school, we were the kings of the Earth(a kid's perspective in America). 9th grade was my last year of feeling safe. 10th grade, 9/11 happened and the world changed.

Eh...I still feel about as safe as I did before 9/11 as I do now. That's just me though I know most aren't like that

In the 1950s my mom had a teacher that scared the shit out of her grade school class with a "we're all gonna die" rant about nuclear war. That kind of stuff didn't happen when I was a kid in the 70s & 80s.

We never had nuke "duck and cover" drills that I remember. We did have plenty of tornado drills and some of those could have doubled for nuke drills. A couple of the schools I went to were labled as fallout shelters and had stuff stored in them.

I will say that nuclear holocaust and post nuclear holocaust sci-fi had a little more impact in the 80s when it was a bit more of a possibility.

The 80s also had the movie The Day After which dealt with the aftermath of a large nuclear exchange. It was meant to be kind of scary and it was.

I guess I'm afraid of nuclear war. However it's only something I think about like once every six months for some strange reason.

I grew up playing video games (not that I'm the only one here), and eventually moving on to an obsession with war games. So in one way, I'm afraid of war coming to us, or nuclear war.

However...

In another way I kinda wanna blow shit up, and don't fear it in the least . :P

Oh yea, was born in 87.
