Only in Philadelphia...

Post by HemlockGrey »

...can a federal investigation into corruption during a mayorial race propel the investigated candidate to victory. Or so it seems. Polls seem to indicate a Street victory. If there is a Vast Republican Conspiracy, it is kicking itself in the ass right now.

Katz failed to change his 'message' after the investigation began, though, and I think that was a rather stupid move. Instead of hammering Street with the investigation he just kept on with his former strategy. Hum.

Incidentally, I noticed that both Street and Katz advertisements are very sensitive to people of various races; both of them. Yes, race is a big factor in Philadelphia politics, it seems, but it seems that asians and hispanics do not, in fact, exist. Or just don't vote.

I don't live in the Philadelphia area, but from what I'm piecing together from the attack ads that come on every commercial break, Street is attacking Katz's business practices in the past, and Katz is basically saying that Street has been a lousy mayor. How accurate is this summary?

The reason is because many voters thing the FBI investigation is only including Street to slander him and get him out of power.

AALCS: Well, on TV, basically, but there's also the whole corruption/Pay-To-Play angle. Attacking pay-to-play doesn't seem to have paid major dividends for the Katz campaign; certainly not enough to overwhelm the wellspring of support for Street in light of the investigation.

SS: Yeah, I knew that, but still, it's bizarre.

Hmmm...I'll have to 'deal' with the members of the VRWC in Philly that are responsible for this. They will never fail us again. Ever.

I'm in the suburbs so I don't vote, but I have a few thoughts.

First, Street is REALLY corrupt. As in, the most corrupt mayor in many years. That and the fact that some Republicans claim that the big cities are in trouble because Dems, control them makes me think I would be supporting Katz.

Street has done jack shit for the city (as far as I can tell) while being corrupt, so get him out. If Katz improves things it's an improvement, and if he doesn't it can't get worse and it might shut up some Republicans (I'm thinking os specific people from other places).

But Street will win. He commands the black vote. In his own words: "The brothers and the sistas are in charge!"

Stupid race.
If you don't ask, how will you know?

Street will win no matter what happens. Black Democratic incumbents don't lose in Philadelphia. Ever. Wilson Goode firebombed an entire city block and got releected. A city block in a black neighborhood, for Chrissakes. If Frank Rizzo had done that, there would have been race riots.
