How do you reform the UN?

Post by Straha »

You have been given unlimited power over the UN, how do you reform it?

Reform it into what? Simply make it work as originally intended? Turn it into a collective security apparatus? Make it into a One World Government?

Abolish it. We have Embassies and State Departments for deplomacy, and we have methods for passing treaties.

It would be a great experiment in diversity; each diplomat could get shitfaced on the beer of his or her country, and we could see how drunken fools from around the world interact.

Last I checked, we could do that here too.

Hm, reform the UN... Change the name to the UNA (United Nations of America) seems like a start...

Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

Every time the American ambassador stands up, the Imperial March will be broadcast throughout the building.

There's a full speaker system in at least the general assemble room, I don't know about the Security Council but there ought to be.

I think that what Churchill had in mind was a collective security/watchdog organisation that would prevent an occurance of the events of WW2.

UN Charter

Preamble

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

Well, in that case, their original charter is self-contradictory. They are simultaneously tasked with upholding human rights all over the world and promoting friendly relations between nations. Small problem: not all nations uphold human rights.

There is intent, then there is politics :) . The UN is a prime example of politics mixed with a good intent.

To not be the League of Nations.

I've never really understood the differences between the two except that the US wouldn't get involved with the League.

I can't say that I ever looked real close at either on though. There might be siginificant differences but to me they both appeard to be about as effective as the member nations let them be.

Well, there are a number of goals you can work towards with the UN, depending on the viewpoint. The first viewpoint: The UN is, at best, worthless, and at worse, an organization seeking to destroy all national identities. This has the easiest solution: Abolish the whole damned thing.

The next viewpoint states that some world body must be available to mediate in conflicts between the nations. According to this viewpoint, the UN is entirely ineffective, since it has no little authority or power to actually back up anything it tries to do. From this point of view, the UN requires its own strong military and strong economic ties between its members. Say, make it that the UN becomes a free-trade zone. And its member nations should have to be held accountable to the UN. Now, of course, most of this is about as feasible as one of us getting <insert names of three hot celebrities here> into a hot <gay/lesbian/bisexual> threesome.

The UN should be given direct rule over the governments of the world.

Their armies become one big one.

The process of governing is sped up.

As it stands, the UN doesnt really serve much purpose in its current form and the current world could survive and in ways do better without it. However, to "reform" or replace it I would set up a system like the Earth Alliance in Babylon 5.

Turn it from the United Nations to the United Nations Relief Organization. Because the only thing they do well, IMNSHO, is humanitarian relief operations.

Other than that, hit the road Jack and get a real job.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots.
