Opinions on "Dogma"?

Post by Steve »

Who here has seen Kevin Smith's movie "Dogma", the fourth in the Askewinverse series (following "Chasing Amy" and being followed by "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back")? What are your opinions on some of the theological ideas expressed within?

Kevin is a Catholic. He actually admits that. But, his views are quite interesting. If you watch the DVD and the cut scenes, you actually get a lot more out of it. The discussion between Rufus, the Muse and Bethany is much longer and much more philosophical. Plus, the SW scene (with Loki, Jay and Silent Bob) is much, much longer.

That was some of the funniest shit I've ever seen, especially those rapid-fire one-liners:

"Oh, your father just left this for you. It happens to be four feet long and shaped like a cock."

"Now I heard that were some deleted early cuts where Han was chuggin' some major Wookie cock."

Hi-LARIOUS!

Having something in common with somebody like Kevin Smith more than makes up for having to put up with whiny assholes like the Catholic League. ;)

I would love to quote my favourite line but I am afraid that I will fuck it up! Screw it some one else can just correct me!

Bethany: Jesus didn't have any brothers or sisters, he was an immaculate conception!
Rufus: To believe that Jesus was an immaculate conceptions is a leap of faith. To believe that a man can stay married to a woman for 30 odd years, remain faithful and not once bang her is idiocy!

Obviously that wansn't the line exactly, but the gist!

Is immaculate the right word?

The thing is, the doctrine that Smith is talking about here is actually the perpetual virginity of Mary. </catholicgeek>

Rufus: Mary gave birth to CHRIST without having known a man's touch, that's true. But she did have a husband. And do you really think he'd have stayed married to her all those years if he wasn't getting laid? The nature of God and the Virgin Mary, those are leaps of faith. But to believe a married couple never got down? Well, that's just plain gullibility.

funny movie even though i saw it in german an they usually fuck up all the gags with translation.

what i really liked was that "disclaimer" in the beginning which sais that people shouldnt take this too serious since god has humor. more religious people should think like that. they shouldnt take themselves their god so fucking serious.

Oh come on, he was excellent and deliciously insane as Bartleby.

The Disclaimer:

Disclaimer: 1) a renunciation of any claim to or connection with; 2)
disavowal; 3) a statement made to save one's own ass.
Though it'll go without saying ten minutes or so into these preceedings,
View Askew would like to state that this film is from start to finish a
work of comedic fantasy, not to be taken seriously. To insist that any of
what follows is incendiary or inflammatory is to miss our intention and
pass judgement; and passing judgement is reserved for God and God alone
(this goes for you film critics too...just kidding).
So please before you think about hurting someone over this trifle of a
film, remember: even God has a sense of humor. Just look at the Platypus.
Thank you and enjoy the show.
P.S. We sincerely apologize to all Platypus enthusiasts out there who are
offended by that thoughtless comment about Platypi. We at View Askew
respect the noble Platypus, and it is not our intention to slight these
stupid creatures in any way.
Thank you again and enjoy the show
