Stupid students thinking how funny it would be to put acid in their teacher's drink, without thinking of the possible consequences.

They should still be charged with attempted murder.

Attempted murder, no high school student could be so stupid that he'd try to spike a teachers drink with Hydrochloric acid as a prank.

They knew that putting Hydrochloric Acid would hurt her in some way. They should be charged with attempted murder.

I still remember the cheerleader who thought it would be cute to pour that shit into the crotch of her ex, and missed and it wound up in my crotch, (I ran very fast to the baking soda tend, and had to get new pants & undies sent to the high school.

Her response "I thought it was just water"

Should make her take a sip, see what type of water it really is.

If the plead stupidity as a defence then a fitting punishment should be to section them under the Mental Health Act.

Actually, when it comes to attempted murder, stupidity IS a defense. Attempted murder means they had to be trying to kill the teacher, otherwise it is reckless endangerment.

I don't know.. You can drink diluted hydrochloric no problem, stomach acid is hydrochloric, after all. But anything above ~2Mol HCl and you're risking some painfulness. Above 6Mol HCl it's really dangerous.

On a similar note, soda's use phosphoric acid in their drinks. Pure phosphoric acid would eat through you, but diluted it's safe.

Stupid idiot kids.

Stomach acid is also on the order of 0.01M concentration. I'm fairly sure than even 1M HCl will cause some serious issues with your esophagus if you tried ingesting it.

Yes, but comparing HCl and H3PO4 is somewhat specious. HCl is 9X as potent as H3PO4.

Plus the HCL in your stomach is neutralised by soda if it gets a bit naughty. You can still dissolve an iron nail in the stuff.

Unfortunately for me I have to go on Zantac every so often to stop my stomach from producing too much acid (which wanders down to the intestines and causes all sorts of fun issues).

Charge'em. Anyone with even basic chemistry lab experience *should* have a healthy respect for that stuff.

Last time I checked, if you need to wear gloves and goggles when handling most of the stuff from an area (chem lab) that anything from said area has no business in someone's food... Definately a deliberate attempt to harm the teacher in one form or another.

Charged and sent away. They knew good and well that this was potentially deadly and need to take responsibility for their actions. That is what is problem wtih the world, people don't have to face serious repercussions for their stupid actions.

These kids knew where the hydrochloric acid was and how to identify it, which means they're taking chemistry classes. Ergo, they know how dangerous hydrochloric acid is, and they were deliberately attempting to harm the teacher.

While a case for attempted murder might be difficult to make (one would have to show that the concentration was potentially lethal and that they knew this), a case for reckless endangerment would be easy.

Freaking A. Despite how much I see shit like this in the news nowadays I still find it hard to believe. This was a deliberate, premeditated act. Charge them with attempted murder in the first degree and throw the book at them. They should never see the light of day again.

They should be charged with something far above the level of a prank. They intended to do serious harm.

That's attempted murder. The effects of HCL should be known to anyone at or below a middle school level.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

No, not necessarily. They don't have to be taking a chemistry class. They could've heard about HCl from maybe TV, media, literature.. whatever and it could've probably been easily found in the chemistry classroom. Doesn't necessarily mean they're taking chemistry. Though at that age.. I'm not sure how it works in Canada.. would they be taking Biology or Chemistry? Here in the states I believe around that age you'd be taking Biology and then Chemistry later..

However, either a) They're incredibly fucking stupid or b) Attempted murder or at least intent to cause harm (or whatever equivalent).
