FCC Fucks America & the Rest of the World Up the Ass

Post by Edi »

That's right. No more recording or backing up any TV broadcasts unless MPAA says so, and they won't. Read the two articles linked here (second is linked from the first one). This is just fucked up, so completely fucked up there really aren't words for it.

Not true, I'll explain why in a moment. It's first worth noting that the broadcast flag is designed to prevent the distribution of copied DTV programs on the Internet. If it wasn't for the distribution of copied music and movies which clearly infringes on copyright laws (see Napster versus RIAA), there wouldn't be a need for this broadcast flag and thus it may never have been developed. Unfornunately, we're experiencing the reality of "reap what you sow".

Now you said "no more recording or backing up of TV broadcasts unless MPAA says so". That isn't true; you can make copies of ANY program, even those with the flag set. But on one condition: your DTV receiver and DVD player is broadcast flag complaint.

Meh. It's their right to restrict their content if they want to; it's their movies after all. I'm not too upset by this. I'm waiting for at least 2005 anyway for prices to drop for a great big plasma screen with DTV and a new DVD player.

It's actually been posted in G&C a couple of times. That said:

This ruling is specifically for ATSC. I don't think Europe will be adopting it, to the best of my knowledge. It may work in a similar fashion to the 'copyright' flag on SPIDF connections: essentially, you can record whatever you want off the broadcast (assuming your equipment has the broadcast flag enabled) but you can't make a copy of that copy. Anyone would be able to view it.

The analog hole is still open. However, it's possible that they could implement Macrovision anyways, which is cause problems with the vast majority of recording devices due to the rapid IRE shifts.

You know too much about stuff I don't give a fig about. There must be some sort of award for that.

For sure the MPAA will push Europe as hard as they can. Who knows, now that it's just been mandated by the FCC, Europe may find it hard to resist.

There's a problem with that assumption. Europe has more brains than the MPAA.

The EU will resist the MPAA because if is the MPAA now if it was the MPAE or some such it would be a different matter.

Bah, there's two live threads about this in Gaming and Computers. Look for "DRM for HDTV" or "Score one for the bad guys"

And since when did Europe listen to the FCC? Lets consider that Europe didn't adopt NTSC either - choosing PAL and SECAM instead. There's nothing forcing them to adopt ATSC as well or any broadcast flags.

This is bullshit. They can't pass rules on me for crimes I haven't even committed yet. Fuck them.
