Overrated movie? Hmm....I know of one very freaking aweful movie that I had the mis-fortune of renting very recently. Gods and Generals. If you see this movie, DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH A 50' POLE! This is by far the most boring movie I have EVER had the displeasure of watching. The first 40 minutes was nothing more than the cecession of Virginia and Col. Lee declining the President's offer to take command of the army...... It took them 45 minutes JUST to get to the first battle. The movie is just 9 or so minutes short of 4 hours long. After 50 minutes, I just hit the eject button on my DVD player and put it back in the box. I am SO glad I rented it instead of buying it. Even Titanic was better than this movie, and that says ALOT. Hell, I figured that with ol' Bruce Boxleitner in it, it might be half-decent since he's one of the few people in this movie that CAN act worth a damn. Boy was I EVER wrong. (I never got to the part that Bruce was in.)

The only thing that salvaged that waste of money was renting both Lord of the Rings movies. I have no idea why so many people could be so fanatical about the first movie. The action scenes were pretty good, but overall the movie was a bore. (Before the usual geeks show up going "WHAT?!", keep in mind that I've never read any of the books so I had no clue what it was about other than what the trailers have shown.) The Two Towers however, more than made up for Fellowship. I actually wanted to pay attention to the whole thing. If Return of the King is anything like TTT, it looks like its gonna kick some serious ass. :)

Armageddon was much better than Deep Impact. DI gave us that shit, sentimental crap, and followed the whole cheesy "first love" thing too far. Armageddon gave us what we wanted: action and fucking explosions. Theres the sentimental crap in there too but at least it doesnt pull any punches; its just a dumb action flick, and if you leave your brain at the door its a highly enjoyable one. Of course its stupid, but its damn entertaining. Its like the people who watch Commando or True Lies and go "yeah right, that'd never happen in real life, this movie sucks!". Deep Impact at least tried to be a little realistic but the characters and the script were absolute shit. Armageddon at least gave us a larger than life, comic-book style action flick.

Moulon Rouge —with very few exceptions, I don't like musicals. But this production didn't even have its own unique score; just lifted pop numbers from the 80s. And when Jim Broadbent started singing Like A Virgin, that was when I really began to hate this movie.

That is such a hateful thing to say about the most enjoyable musical of all time.
It is not enjoyable. It is a worthless, despicable lump of trash and assorted waste that has somehow garnered the status of 'classic'. It is possibly the second-worst John Travolta movie ever made.
I disagree. It's a classic because it IS enjoyable. It is by no means the best musical ever, but as far a movie musicals go it's up at the top. It's fun to watch with friends and the songs are catchy.

I have to agree. Then there's Citizen Kane. I'm watching it now in my video class. I know it's old and revolutionary for it's time but my teacher made such a big hype about it and, well, I was just expecting a little more.

Lord Of the Rings II

so what if we have huge battles with 10K orcs? the dreamy love scenes were a waste, and the Ent's where very badly done.

IMO the first was better, if only for the music and having the Black Riders.

Titanic
I loved this movie. I do not understand why so many people claim it as overrated. Titanic did got many Oscars after all.
Pearl Harbor
While Pearl Harbor does not approach Saving Private Ryan in quality it was still a good movie. There were some problems with the movie but it should not be called overrated.
Waterworld
Considered by many to be a waste of money, I remember a NASA scientist joking that they could have sent a mission to Mars for the money spent making Waterworld. Waterworld was indeed not very good when considering the amount of money spent. It was not however neither as bad as some people may think.
Gladiator
Gladiator was an epic film. How can someone consider it as being overrated ?
Saving Private Ryan
Proboly the best WW2 movie ever made. It is hard to believe that some people disliked it and considered it overrated.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden dragon
Definately not a very good movie and definately not the best foregein film.
The action sequences were medicore and the plot was hard to understand.
Citizen Kane
I heard of this film many times. What is it about ?
2001 : A Space Oddysy
It is an old film and may appear boring to today's viewers. But to me it was a very good movie.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

I'm with you, I thought it was great. Here's the Oscars this brilliant piece of movie magic hauled in:
  • Best Art Direction-Set Decoration
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Director
  • Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing
  • Best Effects, Visual Effects
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Music, Original Dramatic Score
  • Best Music, Song
  • Best Picture
  • Best Sound
Titanic haters, suck my Leopole.

You're insane, it was a piece of shit. A Jerry Bruckheimer movie! Wow! Who cares.

The most underestimated movie ever; it's not bad, it's SHIT.
Gladiator

The blind? Great movie.
Saving Private Ryan
Proboly the best WW2 movie ever made. It is hard to believe that some people disliked it and considered it overrated.
Yes, and it's easily the most realistic war movie I've ever seen, which means ever made because I've seen them all.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden dragon
Definately not a very good movie and definately not the best foregein film.
The action sequences were medicore and the plot was hard to understand.
Who said it was the best foreign film ever made? Nobody. The action sequences were energetic and "magical", while the plot was easy to understand and a lot fresher then the crap coming out of Hollywood.
Citizen Kane
I heard of this film many times. What is it about ?
It's a movie about a nightclub owner in Casablanca called Kane who falls in love with a woman called Scarlett during the American Civil War.
2001 : A Space Oddysy
It is an old film and may appear boring to today's viewers. But to me it was a very good movie.

You do understand what over rated means don't you. it's got a much higher opinion than it deserves. just because it won a shitload of Oscars doesn't mean it isn't the biggest pile of crap ever. In fact the British public agree with me on this as anyone who watched Film 2003 last night will know that it was voted the worst film ever! (above Battlefield Earth, highlander 2 and the Avengers among others)

From what i can remember the list was: (quotes from public)

10 - Highlander 2 (It stank like a dead cat under my cinema chair)
9- Eyes Wide Shut (I tried to walk out of the cinema but the film had anaesthetised my legs)
8 - Battlefield Earth (A totally miserable experience shared with six other sad and bemused people and 120 empty seats.)
7 - The Avengers (I got up at the end and shouted "That was Shit". I got a round of applause)
6- Batman and Robin (I wanted to sandpaper my retinas)
5 - Blair Witch (I've been scared more by things that came out of my nose)
4- Vanilla Sky (The lowest point of my life so far)
3 - Pearl harbour (It battered my intelligence with such ferocity I could barely find my way out of the cinema)
2- A.I. (Turns a promising idea into Pinocchio on Ice)
1- Titanic (It sank. There, i've sved you from wasting three hours of your life)(My father fell asleep after 20 minutes. He was lucky. It was only his snoring that kept me awake)(Shows that the Hollywood glitterati couldn't find their own behinds with both hands, a flashlight and a copy of Gray’s Anatomy)

Overrated movies for me:

Matrix - all of them. While the idea was good I really didn't like how it was done.

SW - The Phantom Menace. You know why.

Pearl Harbour - Tora, Tora, Tora was way better. OK not in visuals but in any other aspect.

ALIEN 4 - That was really just for making more money out of the fame of the previous three episodes.

Hidden Dragon, Crouching Tiger - That really sucked. The most stupid part is when they are running and fighting on the trees.

Blair Witch Project - It was like an exam-movie for me but really a crappy one.

Hannibal and Red Dragon - no comment, über shit.

Most overrated film of all time? Titanic. What an absolutely worthless piece of crap. I more enjoyed watching a mass of worms that my cat vomited up writhe around than I did this "film". It makes me want to stick a wire coat hanger up my nose and fish around in my brain hoping to rip out the grey matter that stores the memories of it. If ever there was a film that should have never been made it's this. If ever there was a film where all those involved in it's creation deserved to be executed, it's definately this. The sooner every trace of it's ever been created is erased and the sooner everyone forgets it ever happened the better.

I believe Clarke was quoted as saying something to the effect of "If you didn't leave the theater with more questions than answers, we failed."

Personally, I enjoy 2001 in both book and movie form.

And we all know what a fantastic measure of quality an Oscar is...

I mean, come one, Tom Hanks winning Best Actor... how many times now?

If I ever see Tom Hanks doing anything approaching acting, I'll probably explode.

Everyone knows that the Oscars is just Hollywood trying to ingratiate itself with the stars and directors and whatnot (sometimes even the public, like for instance that shitty Dance with Wolves, which only won because it wanted to be all touchy feely about the poor indians, not to mention all the times the movie with the Disabled Guy (TM) wins).

Even the Globe is better than that overpriced metal statuette, and even THAT is debatable.

LOTR picked up quite a few IIRC. None for the major categories (i.e. picture, director, actor, etc.) but then it didnt really deserve those and being nominated for all of them is a pretty good feat i'd say.

Don't watch "Turner & Hooch" or "Castaway" then. ;) (Yes, Castaway sucked bigtime, but Hanks did a good job for such a shitty part they gave him.)

Just a neat little bit about Castaway....that bit where he's at Fedex, that was filmed here in Memphis! :) Matter of fact, some of the people my dad works with were in that scene.
