IBM releases firmware updates that supposedly fix this issue.

Took them long enough.

That was released a year ago, Vert. The 'Deathstar' also really only applied to the 75GXP and 60GXP models.

They certainly never informed me of it the last time I sent a drive back to them. I managed to salvage the one I have with a LLF. I still don't trust it though.

I wouldn't trust a 60GXP or 75GXP either, though the newer Hitachis seem reliable.

I had to replace 4 IBM drives last week , 3 for Netvista's and 1 laptop drive. I was happy to see that IBM technical support answered my calls quickly and efficiently. Although the were out of one drive and never told me. So I had to call be and get a substitute.

I think I have a 60GXP. It's been giving me a lot of strange errors both in Windows and Linux-- in Linux I'm getting an occasional burst of ldm_validate_partition_table() errors, and in Windows it tells me that \device\dr2 can't be read from.

AND THE GODDAMN FUCKING IBM WEBSITE IS RETURNING AN INTERNAL SERVER ERROR!

Wait a second... Windows tells me that the model number is IC35L060AVVA07-0, which a Google search turns up as the 60GB Deskstar 120GXP... huh?

Edit: D'oh, that's right. I have a 20 GB Quantum and a 60 GB IBM...

Does this update also apply to the 120GXP?

Erm ... it may. Some 120GXPs might have been bad, too.

How come so many things from IBM are broken?
Examples would be the IBM JDK having the html documentation (or what there is of one) have executable permissions (otherwise it's a lot faster than Sun's), and the Omni drivers having windows-like names with spaces and capital letters which are annoying to type and script, with a nonusable debian directory, which means i have to go in and edit it.

A few things does not make many a broken thing. However, the HD incidents were cause by some bad quality control at the Hungary plant.

Look at the top of the drive to be sure.
