Encrypting Internet traffic

One of my friends is concerned that his family will be using packet sniffers to eavesdrop on him and be able to read email he recieves, AIM chats, see what he's downloading, etc. He and his family are connected to a LAN which is connected to a broadband connection.

Is there a way that he can encrypt all of his Internet traffic so that a packet-sniffer would be rendered more or less useless?

Encrypted E-mail. That means using either PGP or S-MIME. PGP is free, S-MIME is not. Naturally, Microsoft decided to embrace S-MIME.

GAIM has encryption plugins, but I'm not sure how compatible they are. Trillian has them, AIM is implementing it. For email, there's PGP or S/MIME (and you can get a free S/MIME certificate). For regular browsing it may not work so well.

If he has access to a VPN server via university or something he can tunnel all his stuff through that.
