Excellent news, Patrick. Is this your first? I still remember the blizzard of emotions that surrounded my first, followed by the curious letdown that took place when I went home to an empty house because Rebecca and Matthew were kept in the hospital for observation for a couple of days (standard operating procedure, or so I was told, although I made a point of making sure that Matthew was kept in the same room as Rebecca, and not hauled off to one of those damned hospital nurseries). It was a good thing the pedriatics people had a high level of patience for questions, because we bugged the hell out of them for the first month or two.

Cool. Did you stay at the top of the bed or venture down to the bottom? I never (in the three times I was there) ventured down to the bottom.

Did you come close to knocking the nurse out when she stabbed your kid in the foot with that fucking ice pick when she drew blood?

Did you do the honors, and cut the cord? I never did. Yeuck.

Some things to note; If she breast feeds, you're set since you can't take a turn in the middle of the night. If she doesn't and uses formula, start putting a dash of the baby cereal in the bottle when you put the little tike down for the night, after about a week or two. The cereal will expand in his gut and thereby stick to his ribs and let you and the wife/girlfriend sleep for more than 2 hours at a time.

However, either way, make sure she dosen't place the baby monitor above your head or on your side of the bed. :wink:

One word of advice, Patrick: try not to be overly paranoid. I used to wake up repeatedly in the middle of the night, creep over to his crib, and check to make sure he was still breathing. Terrified of disrupting his sleep, I would stare at him in the darkness to see if his little chest was moving. If I couldn't see, I would put my hand near his nose to see if I could feel the air moving in and out. I did this for months, during which I became steadily more and more fatigued for obvious reasons.

PS. Sometimes, I still peek into the boys' room in the middle of the night to make sure they're both OK.
