Family Guy is a love it or hate it matter but i for one think it is very funny and is everything that the Simpsons once was. Its stupid and low-brow, but it has a biting and smart satire in it, and its style is much closer in spirit to the first half dozen seasons of teh Simpsons.

I'm not bashing the Simpsons in general--its my favourite televsion show along with Seinfeld--but its completly plunged off the deep end in teh last five or six years when you consider what it once was. Like i said, it still manages laughs here and there but overall, the show is a pale shadow of its former self. Seinfeld had the decency to go out on top with dignity. But i still watch every new episode, just because i've become so accustomed to the characters.

Exactly, I'm a huge fan of the Simpsons, and I think it needs to be killed. The worst thing that can happen to a good show is it running out of ideas and plunging it into mediocore rut. The Simpsons should stop making new episodes and instead let us remember its great classics.

I liked the "generic 60's Montage" and Kent Brockman's comments about the 60's.

I was really enjoying the lead in episodes of King of the Hill and the rerun episode of the Simpsons where Homer moves in with the two gay guys was pretty good.

No, Family Guy is a different animal. It doesn't 'want' to be the Simpsons... The Simpsons tends to have some sort of serious plot to the episode that is decorated by an occasionally random event, whereas the plots in Family Guy are loose paths that are followed to showcase the random gags.

Seriously, I was listening to the commentary on one of the DVDs, and they admit that they have started with one plot, and by the time they're done writing it, the whole episode has changed completely.

Personally, I like random, insane gags thrown in for the hell of it. Like that giant squid at the dinner table. That fits my sense of humor well, as well as my mindset when I watch a comedy. I think the plot should serve the gags, not the other way around. Of course, it probably doesn't help that a small part of me identifies with Peter Griffin. ("It's a pleasure to see you again. Lovely weather we're having. Now you try." "It's a pleasure to see you again. After Hogan's Heroes, Bob Crane got his skull crushed in by a friend who videotaped him having rough sex." I love saying random shit like that.)

Good thing you mentioned the rope-considering lynching immediately brought the stoning scene from 'Life of Brian' to mind, the basic 'Lynching-Zaia-other things

Anyway, to those harping over the Simpsons good ole days, i would suggest you actually watch the early stuff. It's not actually all that funny compared to more recent episodes, say aprés-astronaut homer. They all have sappy christian morals to the stories and the funny gags are usually few and far between, again, more sap children-based jokes being the mainstay.

Season 1--not all that funny. Crude animation and sloppy scripting but you can see that it was all headed somewhere and the show was still edgey for its time.

Season 2--The remants of the first season's problems erode to give way to smart satire and better writting. Animation is still crude and the show still has some problems but its the first season where it began to develop into its known form.

Season 3--the first season of the Golden Era as i call it--it might as well be the first season since this is when the show became its true form. Brilliant, smart, intelligent writting, good character development, great stories, decent animation quality and impressive guest stars kicked off this season.

Season 8--This to me is where the show really first started to deteriorate. Some say it was 7, but to me 8 is the true beginning of the end. It is here that the story well began to run dry, and the writting began to get less and less funny with each episode, resulting in character inconsistancies as well. Still a great season but this really should have been one of the last ones.

Each subsequent season would get worse and worse, though season 8 to 10 are definitly more good than bad. However by the time season 10 finished it was clear that the Simpsons was out of ideas--at the time it was saved by its loyal audience, familiar characters and still-funny scripting.

After season 10 (which was lame but still largely funny) though the whole series went off the deep end. Seasons 11 to the current 15th season have become so poor that they are mainly watched only out of fan loyalty. Like i said, there are definitly some funny gags in the episodes but by and large, the series is a shallow imitation of what it once was. Terrible stories, bad structures, lame writting, bad voice acting (what the hell happened to marge?), and overall poor quality. The only thing that has improved over the years is the animation quality but to be honest i dispise the crisp, bright, clean modern style and prefer the more organic and looser style of seasons 3-7.
