Are you kidding? The Wachowskis had the brilliance to create a post-modern mythology that holds deep meaningful resonance for anyone with a brain because of its powerfully insightful and thought-provoking melange of cultural elements taken from all eras of our human history from the earliest philosphers to the latest great thinkers. The Matrix is the sum total of the highest aspirations and wonderments of our race, redefining what the very word "human" means while at the same time providing an epic psychocultural place for the audience to create and add its own meanings through careful pondering of the Wachowskis' seminal philosophy text.
All Tolkien did was file the serial numbers off of old musty old stories that were rightly consigned to the trash heap of history a thousand years ago.
