"Ladies and Gentleman of the Galaxy. Chairman Ferdinan and the STellar Quorom have asked me to make an statement on the recent events in the Aquarian Union. The Allaince is happy to accept any Aquarian refugees from the recent conflict. We are also willing to allow Aquarian naval vessels to dock at Fleet Base two in the Free Star Alliance. Fleet Base two is also the home to Task Force 25 of the UTR Navy. We are willing to allow aquarian vessels to dock at FB2 for refit and repair, but can not allow aquarian vessels to operate from the base."

He pasued to look down at the podium and move to the next sheet. "The Stellar Quorom has to day voted to fund the creation of a Free Star Navy, we have palced an order with the UTR fors, two Light Cruisers, 12 Destroyers, and 22 Frigates. As the Alliance has no naval tradition of its own to the UTR has agreed to provide training at both the Defense Guard Accademy on Venus and the Naval Academy on Luna, they have also provided a large team of experienced officers and noncoms to serve as advisors and cadre. Once upon a time, Five Fangs had been called Hephaestus, one of the largest manufacturing centers in the entire galaxy. Now, 300 years hence, it was a shadow of its former self. But a shadow of a mountain can still be intimidating.

"Ships," was the Patriarch's simple command, "we will need many ships."

The Kzin military-industrial economy was a frightening thing to behold when it was put through its paces. The ratcats themselves needed very little more than animals and space to hunt them on, so whatever else they had could be thrown as fuel for the war-fires. Subject peoples could be made to contribute what was necessary, because that was what they were: subjects. The end effect was a highly resilient and brutally efficient system of warmaking.

Thousands of years ago in their home Milky Way, the Kzin had conquered a parallel Earth--with the production base and rallying point for the invasion being Wunderland, an occupied Human colony possessing industry and population that paled in comparison to the Sol system. And they beat the parallel Earth by outproducing them.

When the Kzin set their minds to war, they were very difficult to beat. But the Patriarch had no intention of revving the great machine up to redline. That would not be necessary, a low-level acceleration of tempo should be sufficient.

In the ravaged galaxy, Five Fangs was probably the largest shipbuilding complex still standing. The old rapid fabrication techniques were lost, and ships couldn't be produced in as great numbers as they once were. There just wasn't the money. But production could still be boosted without much difficulty. With this relatively long peace with the SKS and UTR, the Heroes had not had much need for their fleet. These new upstart states could nearly equal the force counts of the Patriarch's Navy! This was unacceptable, and had to be rectified.

The Patriarch notices with disapproval the growing aggression of the barbarians along the galactic rim. Their wars of conquest are a great displeasure to him and it is his intention to improve the size of his standing naval forces to serve defensively in the coming months and years. This memo is sent to inform you of this decision and assure your civilized nations that these new forces are intended for use against the pirates and raiders of aggressive false-nations.

The Patriarch considers the Star Kingdom of Serenity and the United Terran Republic to be predator-animals worthy of respect and recognition. He has sent this memo in the interest of retaining friendly relations and mutual understanding, but any objections you have to his policies will be overriden by the immutable law of self-defense.

HAB Naval Task Force, edge of AU space

Devastation hung in space, most of her massive turbines on standby and half the propellers in real space, being inspected after a brief storm in the hyperwarp that might damage such things. But much of the HAB deployed force was busy, doing what all militaries do well, looting and pillaging.

More then five hundred fifty Aquarian vessels, everything from a 25 meter courier ship to a trio of very unlucky 30 kilometer heavy bulk and container carriers had been rounded up by HAB prize patrols. Many where armed, but only a few had fought back, not aware of the surrender or hoping to escape. Prize laws remain on the books of the Imperial fleet and every crew of every vessel detached for commerce collection AKA grab everything that moves with the right flag, knew they had money in the bank and worked quickly, placing a prize crew aboard and departing as soon as the ship jumped towards the fleet. There they where collected, under the guns of the battleline and the replenishment group, before being formed into well escorted convoys for the return home. More warships where already arriving to aid the process.

The force commander began to ponder. He still had two transport groups from the HAB reaction force, each sufficient to invade and hold a moderately, by HAB standards, defended world. Neither had yet been engaged, nor had much of his main force, not even in the long range skrimish at Dragonis.

He wondered greatly if The Great Leader would approve a few invasions or at least raids. The idea of destroying some Aquarian planetary defenses with satchel charges was appealing. Yes, he'd reguest permission for that at once.

Apparently the higher-ups are looking through the technicalities of our treaty with them...luckily for the moment it seems they need to ask us for help when they're being attacked, and thus far they haven't. So thus far, we've only asked for the enemy to stop. Just in case, the Scout and cavalry fleets are hidden somewhere in Aquarian space, but the others are remaining in Aegis territory."

Waffle: "Well this is thoroughly unpleasant. What if their planets get BDZ'd?"

Captain: "Er, i guess if that happens, the treaty's null and void, although we could take any stragglers wanting amnestry."

And so they sit, twiddling their thumbs.

"It should be obvious that we need defenses against hypermissiles now. The problem is, everyone else knows that too, so now it's a seller's market. We'll have to budget, concentrating on priority targets. The carriers need coverage, making it fourteen. Cruisers and gateships need protection, too, bringing it up 70 projectors just for the fleet. If the enemy does decide to go for escorts the reactive armor will have to suffice. As for planets, the only ones that we really can not have stikes on are Nachbar and Skavenblight itself. Round the order up to 100 ship generators and 5 planetary shields."

Yards all over he Hegemony moved at an even faster bustle than normal. Fleet ships cycled in rapidly, had arcane projections added to their hulls and upgrades to parts of their power systems, and just as quickly left to make room for others. The upgrades, which extended the ship's power field to just below the shield wall, were simple enough. The question on everyone's minds, then, was what would it accomplish.

1. Senior Captain Halsey had just read over the Commonwealth's schedule for convoys leading to their space, then snorted with derision. His subaltern in charge of paperwork looked curiously up at him before Halsey spoke. "Look at the convoy schedule. Even with their gate system they'll barely be able to accomodate a quarter of the prewar shipping levels. That's if everything goes perfect on their side and we know they won't go perfect.

"It's only a matter of time until some Alliance tenders show up. Those fools occupying the Aquarians aren't used to fighting real pirates. They're used to fighting idiots in half-wrecked freighters and gunboats." Halsey shook his head. "When the Alliance arrives - and they will, sooner or later - all Hell is going to break loose." Another subaltern appeared at his door, carrying a FedEx envelope with some sort of hardcopy in it. "Sir. The FedEx courier just arrived on station but he says this is the last delivery to the sector."

"Damn. All the just-in-time couriers are pulling out. The Aquarian economy is going to be crippled if they can't get their materials from offworld. "

General Electric will be pleased to enter the bid for the life support, sensor, engine and computers contact. As we prefer designing complete, integrated systems, we will subcontract to the following corporations in the Kingdom and the Republic. Their components will be integrated into a whole, complete system and delivered. We should stress that the parts may remain discrete to absorb battle-damage; they are not a single point-of-failure.

1. Life Support will be subcontracted to Honeywell Support Products, Ltd on Minneapolis, Earth.
2. Sensors will be subcontracted to Raytheon Ship Systems at Proxima.
3. We will produce the engines ourselves with the GE Propulsion subsidiary.
4. We will subcontract computers to Intersteller Business Machines in New York City, Earth.

3. What appeared to be a middle-aged, yet well-built, man was in a rather nice office within the Palace. He had longish white hair and a rather serious air around him. His desk was made of hidiously expensive Greel wood imported from the Republic, polished and stained to an exquisite finish. A high-end terminal adorned one end of the L-desk; papers filled the rest. He was, by all appearences, a man of power.

And indeed he was. He was the head Ambassador to the Patriarchy: he was on Enigma for some brief affairs of State before heading back. His room was nearly all business and power, except for a single picture - a photograph under magical stasis, if one could believe that! - of his late wife and child. His wife, a black-haired beauty, was long dead. Assasination. His child had died many years ago, though she bore him many a child and some still wrote to him. Simple pleasures for an man.

Of course, this announcement from the Patriarchy had to come when he was away. The reponse would have to be quick; diplomacy demanded it. And indeed, the response was quick and mostly to the point if in diplomatic terms. The Kingdom could hardly protest if the Kzin want to build of their fleet: everyone else was doing it. The Royal Navy, still the largest fleet in the Galaxy, probably would have to follow suit. Ridiculous, but it always happened. Again and again. Large supra-national bodies wouldn't fix that, either.

So the note was sent off to the Patriarch and would be received shortly.

And for the "man" simply named Artemis, well, he began packing his things for the trip back to the Five Fangs.

ooc: the reason I dispatched messages to the SKS and UTR is that the Kzin are really good at military buildup and they've got one of the better capacities for construction and support of fleets. The jump in their fleet counts will be bigger than most anyone else, I think.

As long as the Mods give the okay, no problem there. And yes, the Kingdom knows just how good you are. Assuming the RN builds up, it'll probably be at a less feverish rate. We might not even build up at the moment. Let the economy recuperate first.

And for those who know about the SKS's "motif," yes, Ambassador Artemis is that Artemis.

The Duke of Kesington stood at his balcony, starring out at the new T-3506s. After all these years tank doctrine had changed somewhat but n real leaps and bounds. It was time to send out the orders.

"Lieutenant, send out the Gerald Dukhais Taskforce to assist the Azegart. Send a transmission first, then later on, send a small taskforce led by a light cruiser to finda any war booty out in the boonies of the Aqurian Union."

The Starbridge was running flat out, her engines trying to break clear of the gas giant's gravity well before jumping to lightspeed. Turbolaser bursts bracketted the sleek ship, knocking down her shields but the ship's pilot was good. Careful twists and turns prevented most of the turbolasers from connecting. The ship only had to hold out a few more minutes before she'd clear the gravity well of the nearby moon and make the jump to lightspeed.

Unfortunately for that poor raider's day, clearing one of the moon's moons were a pair of H-Wings and a single Valkyrie all in formation. The Starbridge saw that it couldn't possibly run from those three, so it fought. Certainly, it was well-armed for its size: two oversized railguns, two light turbolasers, a point-defense phaser suite and concussion missile launchers adorned her hull. But in the end, the battle was really on-sided. Her captain had decided to go in for the Valkyire and leave the H-Wings alone. The error of its tactics was quickly made clear when a pair of ion cannon shot crashed straight through the Starbridge's shields and into its hull, promptly disabling it.

The ship was quickly tractored in alongside the hull, Bohrmann's Marines moved in and seized it. No cargo, alas, but there was a moderate standing bounty on the crewers in not a few jurisdictions. Oh, yeah, naval prize courts would probably let them sell the Starbridge, too. So one would think that the captain of RMS Curious Cat would be happy.

"That took far too long to finish up. We should have had that Starbridge in the bag within two minutes. Instead, we ended up chasing that damn thing around the planet and had to revert to our contingency plan. But still, we got our bounty. The ship should sell for a decent price on the market, too. As for the junk we found on that moon, I think that it should sell for a decent price in port. If I recall correctly, the market's up for these old BoydWorks trinkets.

There's a huge backlog of crap that needs to get through as a result.

But the Alliance might move in, and we have to be on their A-List -- not the good one. The money's good, so decide before we head into port."

Four days later, RMS Curious Cat left Io Station in Sol with her cargo and prepared to make the rather dangerous run to the Aquarian Homeworld...

The Aquarian Union was a popular place these days. That was the only reason anyone could assign to why a full two Long Haul-class Fleet Tenders had suddenly changed course and spend into their territory, starting to make stops on the worlds of the former empire.

The ships had deployed their escorts.. A half dozen Gangster-class Cruisers! Entire worlds had kowtowed against such.. and calmly moved to orbit. Various occupying vessels occasionally locked weapons or screamed threats. Few actually carried them out; the prospect of remaining still when a ship whose displacement was closest to that of the legendary Death Stars is bearing down on you was one shunned universally.

What was most surprisingly, however, was that the pirates seemed to be doing something other than raping, burning, and pillaging. A ship would take up orbit, it's escorts harrying and insulting(And occasionally trading limited fire) with the occupying forces while immense amounts of goods were bought and sold with the natives. Perhaps chief among these were black market weapons.

[Aquarian Space]

Well over a hundred divisions had been sent to pacificy Aquarian space. Right now Azegart soldiers and Azegart ships patrolled most the of conquered worlds. Any resistors were smacked down on hard and so far people have gotten the point. Many of the Aquarian ships had vanished but a significant portion had chosen to surrender instead.

Indeed, most were be sent back for technical evaluation, some would be scrapped and other sold off. None of the ships were especially worth buying into service.

The major military yards, already working steadly, were now whipped into a fury. Valeth Yards were but one of a number of yards scattered around the galaxy. The Azegart war machine was being kicked into high gear and few could match the sheer production, perhaps the Kzin, but certainly not many others. The Divine Empire was after all one of the most militarized nations out there and they used their slave labor pool ruthlessly. They had no intention of losing the building race.

While many corporations in the Corporate Sector are in the defense contracting business, we must emphasize that we only sell arms to legitimate governments. We have not, and never will, support insurgances inside legitimate governments. If any weapons produced inside the Corporate Sector are discovered in use by any rebel group, our Fraud Investigation Department will send specialists to examine the weapons and determine how they came to be in the possession of the rebels.
