I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.
Interesting. I'll probably buy it when it comes out so long as it bears no resemblence to FF8.

Overall...looks like an advanced engine of FFX.
Right now...who knows.

This game will be the best. It has pirates in it!

You mean within a single game...or within the series?Vympel wrote:Does Final Fantasy even have a coherent fucking plot?
As a single games...yes.
As a Series...nothing more then a name brand. Means as much to Square as Sprite does to Coca-Cola.

From what I know, FF1, 4, 5, and 6 do. Haven't played the others in their entirety (still working on X, but I'll tell ya, so far it's been the typical Anime "Don't Question The Weird Shit" type of story, at least in the beginning hour... I guess the Japanese really like loose ends).Does Final Fantasy even have a coherent fucking plot?

Then why bother with "Final Fantasy" at all? Meh. Bah HUMBUG I say.

Hironobu Sakaguchi called the first game "Final Fantasy" because he intended it to be the last game he produced before leaving the industry. It seems that he changed his mind after the game was released, but the name for the series stuck.Vympel wrote:Then why bother with "Final Fantasy" at all? Meh. Bah HUMBUG I say.

Damn! They went for the whole "Era of swords and sorcery" thing again.
Ever since FF9 i was hoping they'd do another futuristic one.

Prawn's brief history of Square games:
Final Fantasy, NES - I rented this as a kid, was underwhelmed, and went back to playing the port of Ultima 3.
Final Fantasy II, SNES - Here's the one that really caught my attention, and made me aware of the Square name in particular.
Secret of Mana, SNES - Amusing, I thought at the time, but where the hell is my FF3 already? Bonus points for the downbeat ending.
Final Fantasy III, SNES - It was about goddamn time, and I was not disappointed. Narrowly defeated as Square's #1 game of all time by...
Chrono Trigger, SNES - Every console RPG in the universe can bow down and kiss this game's ass.
Final Fantasy VII, PS1 - You mean our FF3 was actually FF6? No wonder it took so long. Anyway, I played through this, but it just wasn't the same. It wasn't horrible, but I never played it through a second time, and never really had much enthusiasm for FF afterward.
Xenogears, PS1 - Ahahaha! Square has redeemed itself! This is awesome! Insert disc two? Okay... Egad, suddenly this blows! I quit.

For once I'll agree with Prawn. I was massively underwhelmed by seven after playing 3/6. Then again, the real disappointment didn't come until 8. My god that one pissed me off.

I kept getting distracted from the story by the incredible fucking tedium. I probably would have liked the plot if it wasn't such a mind-fuckingly slow-paced game.Durandal wrote:Again, I stand as the sole person who really, really liked 8 because of its story and character development.

I think all the FF games have a few things in common...like chocobos. I've heard they're in every game. And some character is, too...can't remember his name, but he's the one that swears a lot.Badme wrote:There is no continuity between the games. Until now, of course.

Cid's in all of them. It'd be cool if in the final final fantasy it turns out that cid is a timelord or something and unites all the heroes for a multiverse-spanning be all and end all fantasy game.

Chocobos, Cid, and airships are the only common elements across all the games. Though they might have gotten away from the airships in the later installments. Airships, by the way, were just that: flying galleons and man-o-wars, either suspended by a big air sac like a blimp or giant propellers. FFII had the best take on the airship, where entire fleets of them had made regular ships mostly obsolete.Andrew J. wrote:I think all the FF games have a few things in common...like chocobos. I dont' know.. I liked the Airships in FF9. Everybody had one that could fly on/over the Mists, but only two ships could fly without it, both of them 'Cid Specials'.RedImperator wrote:Chocobos, Cid, and airships are the only common elements across all the games. But yes, FFII you could do more with them, like use a wrench, or fly over lava.
