Have you Ever felt out of place?

Have you Ever felt out of place?
Have you ever looked around from what you were doing and realized with an awful sense of certainty that this is not what you were meant to be? That you were slaving away at a job that you were not meant to be in, or that you were wasting your skills in, that you missed your true calling.
Have you been in a class that you just knew you had no interest in but you picked it because it was easy, a requirement, expected of you, a friend was in, etc.
Have you ever been in a relationship where you looked into the other person's eyes, or watched them while they slept or simply watched them when they were not looking and realized that they were not the one for you? That you could do so much better than her, or she than you, but relationship intertia, what your parent/her parents would think, the pussy was too damned good, what have you kept you from doing anything about it?
Have you?

Yes, I have. Moreso the first paragraph than the rest, but yes. And I suspect my friend Bryan is completely the third paragraph, but I don't actually know.

Absolutely, in fact I feel like this now, and have felt like it ever since I have finished high school.Stravo wrote:Have you ever looked around from what you were doing and realized with an awful sense of certainty that this is not what you were meant to be? Yep. back when I was doing ngineering, after a semester I realized it was stupid to do a course because my family expected it. I have been paying the price for that decision ever since, and may do so for the resto fm y life if I dont get my act together... ok rant over.Stravo wrote:Have you been in a class that you just knew you had no interest in but you picked it because it was easy, a requirement, expected of you, a friend was in, etc.

I've been in the 3rd one, luckily I ended it, (albeit horribly), before we made any crucial steps.

Occasionally, when I got home after the first year of uni, for a couple of weeks, I felt I just didnt belong with my friends, I don't know why I felt that, nor was I sure who I belonged with, but for that time, I felt uncomfortable around them, it passed, and I had a fantastic summer, but I think that first lonely first two terms of the first year may have effected me slightly more than I thought.

I'm better today though. It's pretty rare for me to feel like that.
Fuck yes!Have you been in a class that you just knew you had no interest in but you picked it because it was easy, a requirement, expected of you, a friend was in, etc.

Re: Have you Ever felt out of place?
On occasion, I have felt that I should be in some kind of job which involves politics, where I'd make a difference, etc. But I invariably remind myself that I'm just not the kind of person who could ever fit into that role, even if I might potentially have an aptitude for it.Stravo wrote:Have you ever looked around from what you were doing and realized with an awful sense of certainty that this is not what you were meant to be? Who hasn't? I took a film history course once because I wanted an easy elective, and as I sat there watching "Blowup", I realized that I'd rather be doing math. It's a pretty tedious fucking course when you'd rather be doing math. Luckily, I found out that there was an option to skip weekly homework in that course if I turned in a single well-written essay at the end of the semester on one of the films, so I spent a couple of evenings writing an thematic essay on "Blowup" and then skipped the rest of the classes until the end of the year. I handed in the essay and got the 4th highest course grade out of 300 studentsHave you been in a class that you just knew you had no interest in but you picked it because it was easy, a requirement, expected of you, a friend was in, etc.
To this day, I can't help but wonder who the three people were who placed ahead of me.
Nope. After a couple of false starts which went absolutely nowhere, I met Rebecca and somehow I just knew she was The One.Have you ever been in a relationship where you looked into the other person's eyes, or watched them while they slept or simply watched them when they were not looking and realized that they were not the one for you? 2nd one, yes. My mom and cousins had pressured me into joining band and later marching band... quit both after two years of the latter. Yuck. Normal "band" wasn't so bad, but I didn't feel like it was a class for me.

That just described my life as it is now.Stravo wrote:Have you ever looked around from what you were doing and realized with an awful sense of certainty that this is not what you were meant to be? I picked Physics in yr11, all because a girl was in it. I had absolutely no aptitude for it, and found it rather boring (no offence to the scientists in this forum - hell, my physics teacher was cool about it, I was straight with him and appreciated it. I still 'passed,' but only in the most rudimentary of passes).Have you been in a class that you just knew you had no interest in but you picked it because it was easy, a requirement, expected of you, a friend was in, etc.
Not really. Never been in a situation where that was warranted. Never been IN a relationship. I once re-evaluated my friendships though, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say they re-evaluated me. Basically some of my friends were arseholes, and I reached a point where I didn't want to associate with them.*snip relationships*

I am a student so I have to study. The question of choice does not apply to me.Have you ever looked around from what you were doing and realized with an awful sense of certainty that this is not what you were meant to be? That you were slaving away at a job that you were not meant to be in, or that you were wasting your skills in, that you missed your true calling.
Well I have little interest in Economics and Accounting. But I am taking them in my O Level to because I like the people in those classes. And besides if nothing else taking more subjects helps me increase my reputation as a good student.Have you been in a class that you just knew you had no interest in but you picked it because it was easy, a requirement, expected of you, a friend was in, etc.
I have never been in a serious relationship with anyone so I can not answer that.Have you ever been in a relationship where you looked into the other person's eyes, or watched them while they slept or simply watched them when they were not looking and realized that they were not the one for you? That you could do so much better than her, or she than you, but relationship intertia, what your parent/her parents would think, the pussy was too damned good, what have you kept you from doing anything about it?

Nope. I'm still young as all get-out, so I haven't really started my career and had a chance to be horribly, horribly depressed at the state of my middle-aged ass as you apparantly have. I look forward to it, though.Stravo wrote:Have you ever looked around from what you were doing and realized with an awful sense of certainty that this is not what you were meant to be? As for where I am now, I'm happy. Hollywood Video has been good to me, and it looks like it'll be a nice springboard.
Only EVERY SINGLE CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN. I fucking hate school, man.Have you been in a class that you just knew you had no interest in but you picked it because it was easy, a requirement, expected of you, a friend was in, etc.
Eh, sort of. I went out with this girl in high school who was a really good friend. As we went along, I realized that if I played my cards right, we'd make it through college, we'd both land respectable jobs, and I'd marry her and we'd have little kids. That scared me, so I kind of started ignoring her until we could break up (which I'm not totally proud of, but we're still friends, so it's all right).Have you ever been in a relationship where you looked into the other person's eyes, or watched them while they slept or simply watched them when they were not looking and realized that they were not the one for you? That you could do so much better than her, or she than you, but relationship intertia, what your parent/her parents would think, the pussy was too damned good, what have you kept you from doing anything about it?
Basically, my outlook on life is that I'll take whatever I can get; I'll be happy at any level of living...be it meagerly scraping by renting an apartment and working nine to five, luxuriously basking in wealth and eating sushi off of naked women, or anything inbetween. As a result, I don't often lament my current state and its negative impacts on my future opportunities.
As it stands now, all I'm concerned with is why I can't get this 50 Euro Cent coin to stand on end on my desk.
So, Stravo, have you ever had any of those reflections? What brings on this melancholic questionairre?
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

I tend to go through that kind of feeling in cycles, one of which I'm in now. I just sort of feel like I really don't belong anywhere. Ever since I got to college, I've been finding groups of friends to hang out with for a while and then just gradually losing contact with them after a certain amount of time. I go through friends like cute girls go through relationships. And my relationship track record is somewhat appalling. I have a hard time maintaining relationships of any kind, mainly because I really just give up on other people pretty easily.
It was essentially the same in my latter years of high school, when I had a group of people I'd sit down at the table before school started and socialize with. Sure, I talked with them and such, but I wasn't one of the "regulars" that they'd call up whenever something was planned. So I guess you could say that I really don't feel like I belong anywhere in particular. I'm just kind of drifting about from place to place.

I feel out of place almost all the time, more than often to the point where I get nervous and extremely self-conscious about myself.
I'm starting to wonder that I might be socially anxious or something...

yea, i feel out of place doing what i do for a living. Every day i almost dread going to work (while i'm sitting in the parking lot of my job). But until i get into a field i enjoy, its what pays the bills, but my job stays inside that plant and never will follow me home.
I took many classes that were "expected of me" my true calling is art and music. I love biology and have taking many classes in it but for some reason i'm employed as a chemist
Relationshipwise i am swinging a perfect batting average, Met my wife in 9th grade and married her this past may. never have i ever felt out of place with her in my arms. To tell the truth its the only place i feel at home.

For work: No. Every job I've had I've seen as a temporary experience that gives me money, builds up my resume and helps me cultivate my skills and wisdom towards the ends of an even better job and none of them were horrible enough to feel out of place in.
The closest I came to feeling out of place at a job was when I lived at a frat house one semester and felt very out of place there because the guys were complete and utter lame retards who didn't have a clue and it was negatively contributing to the development of my character, maturity, and life experience.
For classes: No. I had to take many classes where the subject matter was not anything I was particularly interested but I simply saw them as goals to accomplish by doing well in them and learning as much as I could.
For girls: No. I believe in enjoying what's around me first and foremost and that includes relationships with girls. I've never began anything with a girl that I didn't expect to be more than temporary fun that I would continue so long as it was a positive force in my life and making me happy. Once it stops doing that, its time to move on.
I do keep my eyes open for the girl to turn out to be that special someone that I will want to keep in my life forever, but that hasn't happened yet.

Sure I have, and from th elooks of things just about everyone that has enetred has had these feelings every once in awhile. The relationship one does not apply to me since I'm not in one but I've been in that position where you Just KNOW this girl is not the one but you keep on plugging along.Robert Treder wrote:So, Stravo, have you ever had any of those reflections? I just find myself having a BLAST writing and then I'm suddenly thrust in some boring hum drum office work and I go, "What happened to the big ass smile on my face a moment ago?" Currently am seriously thinking about making a foray into the publishing world and doing something that I obviosuly love.
But I'm not melancholy, that just flowed out of me while I was typing the question.

Hmm. Possibly. Right now my general feeling about life is a combination of extreme annoyance, occasional anger (directed at myself and others), and a minor helping of jealousy. Mixed with some good times. Fun fun.
