But it feels SO GOOD.

$13,340 of financial aid. Only $3500 of which I have to use on my actual education, leaving me just over ten thousand dollars.

I WIN!

I thought everybody did that. I took out student loans even though I didn't need them and stuffed the money into term deposits to gather interest for me. The student loans are interest free as long as I'm a student, so I figured why not make a few hundred bucks or so of interest courtesy of the government. It's free money, and most of my friends did it too.

Anta baka?

I do that with my student loans, I wish they still did the grant so I'd not have to pay it off, but the loan is only at the base rate of inflation anyway.

And what I can conclude about SB.com from this whole mess is that the board is full of idiot idealogues who think it's a "good" decision to turn down 10,000 dollars when you and your live-in fiancee are about to get evicted if you can't come up with the next month's rent.

In Minnesota.

In January.

Where, please tell, is the sense in this statement?

That would be an especially stupid time to turn down money.

The only government money that I essentially turned down was unemployment. When I left the Navy I was eligible for unemployment until I started college in the fall. Since I had chosen to leave and didn't plan on looking for a job I decided against going for unemployment benefits.

After I was in school for a few years I certainly did not turn down the grant and scholarship money that the government and my school gave me.

I'd like to know what kind of crack the boneheads at SB.com have been smoking if they've been telling you not to take the money when you are in the situation you're in. Considering your situation even if you have to pay it back with some high interest rate it still might be a good idea.

I've know lots of people who got student loans for all kinds of stuff, including my dad, and they are usually to help you get through school not necessarilly just to pay for school. My dad went back to school while I was in high school. Even with him working part-time and my mom working full time we still needed the money he got with his students loans for more than just paying for his classes.

If you can get through school without needing financial aid that's great but don't feel bad about taking any money the government offers you, especially if it's a grant since you don't have to pay it back. :)

You expected sense from the likes of Xort? What are you, nuts?

And if I might add, their beef isn't you getting the money but how you're going to use it. They're not saying you should refuse the money and get evicted. They're saying you shouldn't use it to buy Betsy's engagement ring. Saying otherwise is a bit of a strawman. Though I can understand why you'd feel that way, considering their response and how it'd interact with the emotional high you were riding on Thursday.

But Xort is still a fascist moron.

There's a time for ideology, I suppose, and a time for support. Do whatever you can to support yourself and your family.

Let's see how many people in this thread take the piss in future Welfare and Social Security discussions.
