US ending Iraq's occupation next summer, before constitution

Well, it seems that the US occupation will end by next June, even though the constitution won't be written and elections held until 2005. (Linky)

Even though the military occupation will end when a provisional government is put in place, the US expects that the troops will remain at the request of this provisional government. If they're right, has anything really changed? And will the Iraqis really want the Americans to stay by then?

If US troop numbers are not reduced by a significant margin, it will remain an occupation in the eyes of the people.

I'm actually rather interested in what the insurgents and guerrillas will do once the government is installed and US troops withdraw.

Well, they want us there now. I suppose it all depends on how things go.

If they are behind Saddam, either keep bombing/attacking, or run for office, get elected, and announce the new party choosen leader, Saddam hussien (if he bothers to go public)

If they are not, and are just there to fight, unknown

IMHO, they would be right in labeling said government a "puppet regime." Their isn't much that America wouldn't like that they will be able to pull off with the troop concentrations Bush is going to leave over there.

As for the Iraqi's wanting our troops there, all I have to go on that I will believe is friends talking about letters they've gotten from soldiers over there, who all agree that we aren't wanted. Granted that is twice hearsay, but I'll believe that over hearing Bush say we're wanted there.
