Because there is a war going on between two fundamentally opposed cultures in the U.S. They cannot coexist peacefully, and the traditionalists are more aggressive right now. They have been losing, but now I am getting more and more worried. They might win. Not in this specific attempt, but they seem to be getting stronger and winning more general appeal.baelfire1945 wrote:Why would they even try this? Do they enjoy losing/being embarrassed in front of everybody? I just don't understand.

Actually, I welcome this crap. They will lose, and they will only make themselves look bad in the process. Ideally, every hardcore fundie would be as open, public, and honest about his convictions as Phelps. Let the moderates see these fuckwads for what they truly are.

I'm sure some vote whore Congressman from a Bible Belt district will submit a bill like this just to say that he did. Then it will die in committee, because even a Congressman is smart enough to know that a law can't overturn a SCOTUS ruling.
Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963

They're doing it for money. They put up this bill in committee, and rally their constitutents around it. The bill dies, and the money is raked in. Next election period when it's attack ad time, they can point their fingers to the 'evil liberals trying to keep God down' and raise even more money.baelfire1945 wrote:Why would they even try this? The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.
